I think it started to occur late 1970 for 71-up cars to make it more difficult to reproduce (falsify) them...
The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

This was the only thing I could come up with. Just a complete guess tho. My relatives v code 71 chally has them also. Note: two of the asterisk VIN tags I posted are "B" Hamtramck cars.................and the other has an asterisk where the assembly plant character would be...............and taken from the Hamtramck-Historical website.......so far that only makes one assembly plant using asterisks.......just noting this. I know that on one certain motorcycle VIN there were asterisks at the beginning and end as sort of security so no additional characters could be place in those positions, wonder if that was the same reason for the asterisks on those VIN tags????
Mike A majority of manufacturers back in the day used the asterisks on their tags as "security asterisks" to define the beginning and or ending of a VIN sequence, in current production years the number of asterisks and or their location depending on the manufacture denote US, Canadian or Mexican production
