I'd have to say it somewhat matters the field of work you are looking into. Automotive you want to be more central to the Detroit area. Ford is Dearborn, GM is Warren, Chrysler is Auburn Hills. I've heard of battery suppliers that are more west. If you give a general idea of what type of work you are looking for, I'm sure us locals can offer up some suggestions.
Junk is something you throw away just before you need it.

What's a good low cost area to live in temporarily? I'm going to be headed over there in a week, need to find a temporary place to live while I find a job (most places just throw your resume in the trash if you don't have a Michigan address). I've been looking at Lansing since it's somewhat central, but not sure how shady the areas are. I'll be driving an 04 cobra that I would like to keep safe :P I live just west of Lansing. Pretty nice suburbs the entire circumference of the city. As suggested, You may want to be closer to Detroit depending on what field you work in. Grand Rapids metro is the place I would check out if I were new to Michigan. Plenty of work in the surrounding area there. Also, considered a very nice area to live.

Well I'm aiming for automotive but I'm willing to take almost anything just to establish myself, I'm looking at Lansing because depending on what company is interested, I won't be too far of a drive away for an interview. Like I said this is pretty temporary (like a month or so hopefully) until I find a job.

There should be plenty of temporary housing there as soon as school lets out. I think this is early May.

If your looking in Lansing, go to the west side of town in to the Grand Ledge area. Look around the I69/Saginaw Street area. East Lansing is unrealistic in rent due to being a college town. Grand Ledge is a farm/family community.
GM's Delta Twp. ASSY plant is nearby as well as various suppliers.
Cost of living is realistic in this area.
I am not rich...but I get off my ass everyday to make sure I am not broke!
Can we get the Mexican cartels to help us with our supply chain issues? They don't seem to have any trouble getting stuff from one place to another.

Cost of living is realistic in this area. I live in Grand ledge and would recommend West side too. However, he is looking for short term stay. Finding a place to rent for a short time is going to be much easier near East Lansing due to the College kids evacuating all the housing for the summer soon. Trust me I love the west side. Not gonna be easy to find a place for 30-60day rental though.

Due to East Lansing being a collage town, most rentals are 1 year - August to August. It will be difficult to find a short term lease. You may be better off negotiating a long term stay at one of the Country Inns and Suites in the area. A potential employer may also provide a bit of relocation assistance and temporary housing $$.

Long term stays at Hotels can be very good options booth price and amenities. At least one meal a day (Continental Breakfast), internet access, maybe a pool, maid service. The long term rates typical are lower than day to day rates.

That is good advice for his situation. Wife is from Lansing area, we live in Portage. Getting a long term weekly/ monthly rate at a place like you suggested gives you cable, maid service, breakfast, and no worries regards when you leave
