OK to use a little bearing grease to hold the rod up in place?

Grandma always said I had "hands of gold"!

Yes, it’s a common method.

don't be a dummy like me 50 or more years ago.
replacing a fuel pump, and it wouldn't sit flush with the block. no problameo, just crank up the bolts, and CRACK ! followed by a faint "poink".........
took the pump back off, and the actuating arm was missing............. shock
then i got the opportunity [or "opperchanceity" as my old man put it] to remove the oil pan and remove the chunk of the arm that had found a new home.
it was then i was "learned" about the pipe plug below the push rod and using grease to hold it in position while bolting down the pump.
these days, i forget lots of "stuff", but for some reason, this "lesson" sticks with me............ laugh2
