Try a quality 3/8 drive one? perhaps an impact 3/8 drive ? those sockets aren't as brittle as a standard chromed one. what diameter does it need to be for the required clearance ?

They offer smaller headed bolts that addresses this. Are you using a stock size head bolts

I'm going to go visit my bolt supplier I wouldn't use anything but a purpose-made head bolt in there !!
