Okay guys. Who has the best trick for that center head bolt between the valve springs on a small block? There's got to be a better way than turning a couple of sockets down in the lathe. I now have four wrecked 1/2" drive 3/4" sockets because by the time you've torqued a head down, the socket is cracked.

Are you trying to use a deep well? I use a short well with short extension.

perhaps an impact 3/8 drive ? those sockets aren't as brittle as a standard chromed one.
what diameter does it need to be for the required clearance ?

They offer smaller headed bolts that addresses this. Are you using a stock size head bolts

Grey Pneumatic offers a thin wall impact socket under the "Duo" branding. Might be worth checking. S/F...Ken M

I'm going to go visit my bolt supplier and see if he can source me a pair of proper length shoulder bolts. Those sockets look like a cool piece, too.

I wouldn't use anything but a purpose-made head bolt in there !!

ARP sells two different type head sizes on their head bolt, 6 point and 12 point, which are usually 7/16, 1/2 or 9/16 head bolt socket size depending on the kit part # and application.
OP, call ARP and ask them about buying two of those upper center head bolts you need to finish assembling the job twocents scope
