Tried forever to install strut with no luck, finally brought to guy who built it for me and he was not able to install it either. He said,I assemble the band strut assembly before I put low reverse drum in, so he gutted the trans and started from the beginning. Took him only 45 minutes take apart and reassemble. Everything ok now. He said it may have been that the band is new and is just a tight fit. Again this transmission has never been ran since rebuild!

Just a couple weeks ago I went though mine and pulled the rocker shaft out to put it in. The tail stock was already off so that wasn't much effort.

The retainer on my 727 tailshaft had been cut off which allowed the l/r rod to remove itself from the trans on launch.... we won that round and as we were in the pits we suddenly were met with a trail of trans fluid. We quickly jacked it up and started inspecting and found an empty hole at the rear of the trans. We dropped the pan where we were greeted by the l/r band strut and associated hardware.... the pin was recovered from the track and we tried in vain to get all that krap lined up and the pin back in place. I finally grabbed all the components, brake cleaned them and taped them all together with gorilla tape, and guided them into place and wiggled the pin back in. Luckily there was a large oil down so we had time to get this project completed in time for round 2. Adjusted the band, filled the fluid, threw away our t-shirts and continued to race for two days. Serviced the trans when I got home and all the thread from the gorilla tape was on the filter laugh2

Whoa, great story of race dedication. And a nice display of how that trans comes apart and goes back together.

Only in SOME cases. Your circumstance isn't typical, I've never had a problem installing the strut in a fully-assembled trans.

I’m guessing that because the low reverse band is brand new and has no break in at all, that it didn’t have a lot of clearance?? Or maybe the style of band may be bigger than normal?? But all Is ok now.
Thanks for all the input!

It wouldn't take much in the way of thicker lining or core design to cause your problem.
