I had a incident two weeks ago where I cause my oil pan to hit on the return road at Medford drag strip causing it to leak bad enough to not be able to run it again before having it welded up. It is a older Hamburger SS big block 10 quart pan with a large kick out, it had been repaired before I got it and needed the drag link tube removed before I could use it with the Lee Smith Engr. dual line swinging pickup, which increase the capacity by several more quarts. I had used one #12 AN Milidon SS hose for one of the pickups and used Fragola fittings and there black lined hose for the other longer pickup hose to go to the front of the Milidon oil pump fitting. The SS hose is fairly short and not easy to install and get both fittings hooked up, it has worked well until I removed it to fix the pan. After fixing the pan( I put 10 quarts in it) the oil pressure would go up to 60 lbs.(normally goes to 80 lbs. cold with 10W30Wt ZR1 oil in it) and then start to drop down after running for 15 to 20 seconds , it was headed towards to zero so I shut it off and check the high pressure bypass valve and spring to see if it was getting stuck, it wasn't. The upper SS hose was slowly leaking oil out of it dropping down onto the lower Fragola black hose making me think at first it was leaking oil out of the valve cover gasket but it wasn't. I started the motor up several times more and it would do the same thing after running a short period, I shut it off and it would be fine for 15 to 20 seconds when I ran it again and them start to loose pressure, it finally hit me that the short upper hose would start sucking air into it where it was leaking after it suck all the oil away from the leak so it could suck air easier I must have broke one of the SS wires poking a hole through the lining into the center causing the leak I'll replace that hose with another Fragola hose after I get the fittings I need to make it I hate Murphy See my last post on this issue for the updates

Will you test the oil system with a priming rod? No, it is leaking oil when sitting so I'm assuming it not going to stop leaking. I'll make another hose to replace it

I dont know where the hose is mounted but if its after the pump all of that is under pressure so it its hard to get it to suck closed... I should have asked is it the suction side or pressure side

The hose is real short on that pickup so teflon lined hose is not useable due to being not flexable (SP?) enough to make the curve up to fitting on the oil pump with out kinking. I made the new hose a little longer( 1 1/2 to 2/0 inches longer) hoping that will help, if it doesn't I'll shorten it to the same length as the old hose

I replace the swinging oil pickup hose along with having a small weep hole welded up on the pan and reinstall both. No leaking from either one Oil pressure went back to 80 Lbs. steady idling and rock steady pressure for over a minute I took a picture of the new longer hose installed on the motor , I was very careful to not kink it due to it being another new Milidon SS hose I forgot I had Racing this weekend, hopefully This oil pan has been through the war, more than once

So how long are you guys seeing these braided hoses last before they have internal issues?
I've had one braided fuel line start leaking after about 12 or 13 years of use. I'm still using the same external oil pickup braided line I put on my car in 2003. I have not noticed any issues w/ it, but now I'm thinking maybe it's time to change it anyway. Same w/ my trans cooler lines...regular -6an braided steel, not ptfe. Been on the car since somewhere around 2003 or 2004 I think.

I've not heard of any PTFE hoses failing while in use and not bent, twisted or damaged some other way I owned and maintain my small airplane, 1960 piper Comanche 250, for 16 yrs. Never had any problems with any hose on it but they do have a recommended life span on them and the FAA says you need to follow it, same thing on commercial aircraft but probably a higher, stricter standard The rubber line hoses will fail with use or even while setting on the shelf due to age

I know i must be crazy....but believe it or not, i have steel braided heater hoses that were installed in 1978. Not kidding. Never leaked. Now i have to change them bc i jinxed myself. These come from the Grumman airplane manufacturer. Grumman is/was 20 min from me and where my car came from. So i always thought their quality was probably higher than the braided hose speed parts one could get. Who knows. But 42 years, and no leaks is insane. Thought you’d get a kick out of that.
