Photos of the stamped numbers would help.

Should be PP833

22(*)5 is a build date some time in the early '68 model year.

Thanks John The asterisk is a digit I cannot clearly see.
Would it be legit in a 1970 model year e body? Build date of September 69?

A clear photo will help avoid guessing.

Is there a book or other printed info on how to decode the trans? Then one could do it himself.

If the number is actually in the 22xx range, no. '70 would be in the 28xx-32xx range. As suggested, a pic would help.

& quality responses/decoding require quality info to base the answer on work

which tailshaft is on the transmission? the E-body tailshaft did NOT exist before model year 1970

I appreciate the help but all of the stamped numbers are really light and mounted in the car so its difficult at best to decipher what I see. I'm doing the best I can.
Its in an Ebody right now. I try to take some shots on Monday.

No book, though folks know how to decode the date code, and there is excellent info on casting numbers, bearing sizes, shift lever info etc.... on several websites. No magic identification mark on 4 speed transmissions.

Brewers performance has some of the casting information, but that does not give specific applications. All parts books have the 10,000 calendar for the specific year. You’ll need all the years to get it complete. There may be a source online for it all in one place. Dave Wise may have some information on decoding the PP833 series of numbers on his site. The vin stamping number, the 0B123456, is best to post it on this site. There are several members who track vin numbers and have access to info the normal guy does not. They can tell you pretty close as to what kind of car it possibly came out of because of when and where the vin numbers falls in sequence. Hope this answers your question.
