What is the correct style of lower steering column bearing for a '71 Challenger with automatic console shift? I see that there are a few different applications available. When I got the column, there was just a plastic ring that fit inside the forward end of the outer tube which was held in with a large C-clip.The plastic ring is much wider than the steering shaft itself, so it looks like there should be a bearing or something filling the space.

There are no provisions/threaded holes for bolts at the forward end of the outer tube that are often used to mount lower bearings. Is there another type of bearing that is retained by a clip at the end or bottom of the outer column tube? I will try and post a pic.

Thanks!

dust/hot engine compartment air seal and white plastic retainer from the factory.

You can add a bearing there if you want. I did this mod on mine and it was pretty easy since I was redoing the steering joint anyway. Pin has to come out and I had to do a little sanding on the shaft and grinding on the bearing to get it to slide on. Here is the how to and part number, got mine from amazon.

I think the E body column with a lower bearing came out in 74,,,MAYBE 73
prior to that was just a dust seal and retainer

1970 has a lower support with snap ring to hold it in

This col. out of a 74. Took them 4 or years to realize it "may" be needed.
Therefore guessing it's a good upgrade for all years.

This is great info!

I failed to mention in my original post. that the column in my car originally came out of a '74. What was left of it looked very much like what is shown in the photo of the '74, but the bearing itself was pretty much disintegrated. I put it back together with just the plastic ring, clip and dust boot. Seems ok so far...
