rear main seal retainer offset? #2723640

Why are all rear main seal retainers offset to one side? I found this on original retainers as well as on aftermarket ones...

Compare the distance of the outer edge to the bolt holes left and right. On the right side there is slightly more material:

Look at every main cap and you'll see they're offset too. So they get installed correctly.

Manufacturers specs. and the company that makes them tolerances can vary some work
If the threads in the stock retainer are still good that is the one I would use on a stock block up twocents

I remember Monte Smith used to post that he would enlarge the holes slightly to get the retainer centered on the crank journal to keep them leak free. He also used to clock the ends of the seal at 12 and 6 too but I have yet to try that method shruggy
