Happened to me. It was a loose shift ear on the gear box.

That happened to me last year with a recently assembled car. I'd driven it up and down the road without incident and the first time I got on it hard, it stuck in second gear. I too had a new noise coming from the transmission.
Put the car back on the hoist and disconnected the shifter linkage and putting a wrench on the shifter arm turned it back into neutral position. Took a bit of effort to turn it back, but not alarmingly so. Turned out the shifter stop wasn't quite in far enough. Turned that in about a turn and no more problems.
Lead, follow or get the hell out of the way
