Shifter still controlled PRND21, overdrive controlled by the computer. Switch was to lock out od.
Any 904 or 727 shifter will work. Only need a switch to turn off od when you want, can be on shifter or dash or...

What do I need to do with the converter lockup? Shouldn't the factory computer take care of that?
This truck has a 91 Dakota chassis, a 360 Magnum, the 46re trans, a 9 1/4 (70s version) with 3:23 gears, a small 39-47 cab, hood, grill shell, and a 6'6" Dakota box floor with the 39-47 sides. Essentially its a Dakota RT with about a 1,000 less lbs. The little I've driven it leads one to believe its going to have plenty of power for the way this old man drives. Here are the most recent pictures I have of the truck, at the paint shop. Gene

Sounds like a fun build. But I think you may have caused a problem using the 70s rear axle.
I think the 97 ecm used the speed sensor on the rear axle to control overdrive which the 70s axle doesn't have.
A 91 Dakota ecm would have used a speed sensor on the tail shaft of the transmission. And the 91 Dakota axle would have a rear axle sensor for abs.
Where are you picking up the vehicle speed reading?

The RE (Rear drive Electronic) designation started in '96, prior to that it was RH (Rear drive Hydraulic).
