I have a 451 that has been in my car for some time. I built the motor years ago, spent most of its time at the track, turning the car to 10.70's. Well, over time I now prefer to drive the car on the street, but its a pain to drive on the street, due to the cam and carb on the motor. I was running a cam motion solid roller that i got from indy cylinder head 276/283 @.50 691/630 lift.

Ive decided to swap in a milder cam. Im going to run a comp cams 292 xr street roller 254/260@ .50 and with the 1.6 rockers it will have 620/628 lift, and run a 1000 cfm holley 4150. I feel this will make the motor much more streetable compared to what i have. Will also match my 4.10 gear and 4000 stall converter better than my old cam did.

Anyways, I would like to get my 440-1's rebuilt. Iwas thinking about sending them back to indy cylinder head to get it done. I was wondering if anbody else does a good job on rebuilding heads. I dont trust the local shops here at all. My heads just have the bowls ported on them. Do you think for this setup i am goingto run, Will i benifit from further porting?? And does my new setup seem like a good choice, just looking for some opinions on who to send my head too, and any advice.

Send them to Mike Duke in Indy ( not AT Indy--IN Indy ) May be listed Mike Duke Racing or some such--He worked at Indy for years and IMO is one of the best head guys in the world and close to you sorta.. His valve jobs are as good as it gets and he KNOWS how to do the -1's. Get them fresh, get them flat and put them on For your CI I don't think porting will help-- then you'll just have to turn the engine even harder to make steam. That cam looks like some I have used in that CI with great results on the street.

I have experimented a little with the Indys on a 451, and I woudl say that you would get better results retainign that cam and converting to smaller port heads. Our 451 with the 440-1's made 713 hp at 7300 rpm with that cam on pump gas, peak tq at 5700 and was a complete dog below 5000 rpm. With a smaller port window "Stage VI's" the same short block made 649 hp at 6000, only after that the 440-1 headed version took over, and peak tq at 5000, 40 ft-lb more than the 440-1's peak. It made more tq from 3500 up than the 440-1 at peak and 500 ft-lb already at under 3000. By putting a smaller cam in there you are just making another "undercammed rect port chevy", the cams and the cylinder heads operating range with the dispalcement you have are just wrong, it's not a great combo.
