Hello to all, I installed a Control Freak IFS in my 72 Challenger. When installing the engine using the brackets and isolators sent with the IFS I found that the engine was at an angle front to rear . I noticed this right away as the sixpack on top made it obvious. If you were to run a string from the center of the engine in the front through the center of it to the rear of the car the string would be toward the left/drivers side. I talked to a guy who has done plenty of mopar engeine installs and was told this is common and that the tranny tunnel is also at an angle . I could swear that when my previous engine was in the car it was sitting in a straght line front to rear . Can anybody verify this. Thanks for your .

What's an IFS? Is the angle up and down or right to left? Is it a SB or BB? All Mopars have the engine offset to the right side. I've owned and built Mopars since 1962 and I don't know what you are asking. Please clarify!

Sounds like the typical offset to the right.

babarracuda, An IFS is an Idependent Front Suspension, similar to the Alterktion. I guess you can say it is right to left. The front of the engine was more to the right than the rear of the engine. I have since pushed the front of the engine toward the left until it was straight to my eye. Not sure if doing so is okay. Hopefully this answers your questions.

Naw it sounds like he said at a angle?
Tranny tunnel is not angled as some have suggested.

Sounds like pretty much every RWD Chrysler product Ive ever seen. They are all offset to the passenger side

you don't mean the engine is tipped over towards one side do you? as in, the top of the engine is closer to the left side than the bottom of the engine, right? you're just talking about how much space is between the block and driver side inner fender vs how much space is between the block and the passenger side fender, right? if so, that's normal.

70Cuda383, Niether. What I am saying is that if you stand in front of the car and look down the center of the engine it is crooked. The right side valve cover is closer to the firewall than the left side valve cover. Think of the engine being able to pivot on the oil pan and moving the front of it slightly toward the right side of the car. Hopefully this clarifies my question. Thanks.....Ed

We all know the engine/transmission offset towards the passenger side to be correct, but what you are describing is in no way correct. The crank centerline should be parallel with the centerline of the car.

This is why I bought an AlterKtion, no worries with geometry at all...

The right cylinder head is always closer to the fire wall by a couple inches. About a rod width.

The motor is always offset to the passenger side a couple inches.

But from what I always remembered the centerline of the crank should be perpendicular to the firewall. In other words the front of the valve cover should be the same distance as the rear of the same valve cover from the fender.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

The driver side is more forward anyway because of the cylinder bank placement in the block.

Didn't mean to imply that it's typical to be angled, just offset.

This is normal. The right side head is positioned farther back on the block than the left side head do to block casting and cylinder position not being directly opposite each other. As for being offset somewhat toward the right the engin is positioned off center to clear the steering box better for one thing.

Oooops, My mistake-I realize the heads are offset. Just describing it as the person who told me it was normal for the engine to be crooked. Thanks for all the replies and for clarifying what I thought to be true. I thought I was . As for my choice of Control Freak over Alterktion you may be right, will have to wait and see.

We need updates I've been wondering how well they work.

Lefty, My car is quite a ways off from road ready . When I do get back on the road I will post my opinion of the Control Freak.
