What coil would you recommend for 1974 400 big block stock distributor with Mopar orange box with stock balast resistor? Looks like the Mopar 2495531 is no longer made.

I a/b tested orange box, chrome box, super coil, blaster 2 at the drag strip back when my gtx ran mid 12s. I found no difference in et or mph, or ease of starting, or much of anything between them in that context. :shrugged:

Ok

Thanks

I always have a spare coil and ballast resistor. Just got an orange box, was running an old LX-101 which the car came with. Don't know how old. Just wanted the orange box.

I believe Keith dunnuck (sp?) tested several coils under more
Controlled conditions (dyno), and the winners were Mallory volt master,
Yellow super stock coil, and big yellow super coil. I can't quite remember which was top dog.
This was some time ago and I've had msd and hei on the brain.

I have been running this orange box with the Acell Super coil since 1999. First it was in my boys Dart then in 2006 I put it on my 63. Two years ago I bypassed the ballast and took it out and I have been running it with a full 12 volts to the Acell Super coil for two years with no problems. And the coil never gets hot at all which told me it may be fine and it has been. I was running the .75 ballast but I like the hotter spark with no ballast. It will depend on the coil you use as to if it will work without running a ballast. But if I were you I would use a ballast as you can always try it later without it if you like. I have always carried a spare ECU , coil and dist pick-up just in case but I have never needed any of them. I used to also carry a spare ballast but dont need to anymore. Ron

The coil that sits in a can is less efficient than an E-core coil. You can buy them from the major manufacturers or you can use one from a Ford TFI equipped car. FD478. Here's one for under $10.00 delivered:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/BORG-WARNER-Select-FD478-NEW-FORD-LINCOLN-MAZDA-MERCURY-82-97/261647237128?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649

This coil is built to operate as an inductive spark coil, like the orange box is. It releases more of the stored energy to the plug as it is more efficient. Cheaper versions have an aluminum coil terminal.

It doesn't look the same and may be harder to mount, its only drawback.

I've been running the blaster 2 mainly for reliability and fit in factory harness on my stroked smallblock. I like it.
