Why? it could be done, anything can be done with a welder and plasma cutter. I would start by finding out what donor vehicle would have frame rails same distance or with in an inch of 72-93 truck , start there.

I think the Expedition is larger than 8.8 ring gear.
Go with something that has a rear subframe that the complete IRS is mounted, Tbird, Mustang late, Comaro, Challenger.

05 and up Expedition is IRS, I own a 08 just not sure of ring gear size but larger than 8.8.

I blame brain fade, must be all those genetically modified foods I've been eating.
I was thinking about the Excursion. Expedition has had independent rear suspension for some time now, and IFS from the beginning.
So I have uncovered a NEW rear end, the Ford 9.75. I believe it's a Sterling unit, made at their Sterling plant. It has a 9.75 ring gear like a Dana 60, but isn't a Dana 60. It's available in both solid axle and independent configurations. The first variety of these had 34 spline axles. Later ones had 35 spline.
This axle should be able to handle some serious torque.
