Hi from sweden, i have one -68 charger 383 that i bought from usa some years ago, tranny had 1000 miles on it when i bought it , it has always had a wining noice and 2 years ago something happened and it has been sitting since then because no time to fix it but now its time.

Reverse works and dont wine, the car wont move forward when shifter is in D position , if you put it down to gear 1 you can drive it but it is very noisy "sounds like a bird" and you can also manually go from first to second gear and it still works but very noisy.

So what do you guys think is the problem.

Some are saying this, the overrunning clutch (sprag) has failed. No way to fix it without removing the trans

Why not install a bolt in sprag? No drilling or tapping required.

Many times a clogged or dirty filter will cause the trans to whine and get louder as you step on the gas. I also have had clogged tranns coolers cause the same whine noise. But if your rebuilding it you should find your problem. Make sure the cooler flows good or get a new one. Good luck , Ron

The bolt-in sprag is no different from a pressed in sprag except for the bolts.

As you live in Sweden and part cost probably equals shipping cost, I'd say get a Super Sprag and be done with it.

As I understand if the transmission is in Drive, the low band does not apply, only the sprag stops rotation of the drum. When you manually select Low, the low brake band is applied. And that is what an aftermarket LBA valve body does, every start.

There have been a few recent posts about where to get parts. As you're so far away I'd suggest the same person you buy your valve body from.

R.

Stumpy though you have good intentions you picked the wrong Bolt in to link, that type bolt in ... besides being overpriced ... is a complete waste of time and money. It is a stock replacement sprag and does NOTHING other than lighten your wallet.

Petri, that type sprag is used to REPAIR a sprag that has spun in the case. If the outer race in your trans has not spun, and is not damaged other than the rollers not locking/rolled over, it will do nothing to strengthen your trans.

You need to use the A+A super Sprag or the Coan Ultimate Sprag, the bad is they run about $200 US.

Contact John Cope /CRT ...

That looks like the springs from the rear sprag, you might as well pull the trans out ...

You are lucky you didn't explode the front clutch drum panic

Here's what the sprag looks like installed and after a failure. Note that the failed unit is a common bolt-in.

Two of the bolt holes in the front pump are threaded for a larger bolt. Use a slide hammer(or something similar) screwed into those to pull the pump out. Back off the band adjusters and start removing drums etc. If you search online you should be able to find a teardown video or at least some good instructions.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

Street driven cruiser I'd be replacing the springs and letting her ride if that's what's wrong... but that's just me. Mopar reusable pan gaskets are nice too.... smile

I think I would want to find out what is wrong with it, why it is acting that way, and repair it before throwing parts at it..

It would be very rare to find a sprag failure with only the springs damaged. The damaged rollers are usually too large to work their way to the pan but the damage will be apparent after full disassembly.
