I need to dye the vinyl seats and door panels in my 68 Dart GTS. The previous owner installed Legendary seat covers and door panels a few years back and the color does not match the interior very well. Where is the best place to get a dye that will match? The kick panels are correct color that I want to match them to.

Maybe your local auto body paint supply house can match it with SEM products and will also have the vinyl prep used before dying by the same company.

At least some auto paint stores can mix vinyl die in any color you wish. You may need to check with some of your local stores. On the other hand some of the interior stuff in these older cars didn't match very well from the beginning.

Carquest has a great selection here and will mix it to suit. About $60 quart for quality stuff.

The local Carquest stores near me have been bought out or closed. I have a PPG store not too far from me. I can bring the kick panel in to see what they can do. Thanks for the suggestions.

SEM is a paint, not a dye. To my knowledge you cannot dye vinyl.

My experience is that it's OK for non heavy use areas like door panels, dash pads, headliners etc. But not on something like seat covers, especially drivers side front.

You are correct in that you cannot "dye" vinyl since its not porous. BUT, SEM is the closest you're going to get to a product that will change the color of vinyl.

I'd use SEM just about anywhere ... EXCEPT seats. Unless you don't mind doing them every year !!

Sounds like a marketing term for paint. I've used it before with good luck on dash boards. I have seen it scuff off higher abrasion areas like kick panels, never seen it used on a seat however I have read some claims that it works ok if used with the adhesion promoter. I would sooner put the money towards new seat covers, enough SEM + adhesion promoter isn't exactly cheap.

Well I think if you painted a piece of vinyl with Rustoleum and another with SEM you find out what the difference is pretty quick. The paint won't have the flexibility that the SEM does. The gloss level in the SEM is also correct for doing soft interior parts.

One thing I noticed with SEM is a) it takes very little to cover and b) it doesn't change the underlying pattern. It seems to have the absolutely perfect consistency to flow and blend and then dry almost immediately. Even if you have to touch up a spot it blends with no dry area from overspray.

I have used SEM on door panels. I was happy with the results. I hate the fact that these are not very old just a poor color match. Guess I may have to go with new seat covers. Thanks for the input!
