It seems that one of the times where I used the windshield wipers and drove the Dart in like-rainy conditions that one of the metal inserts that hold the refill in fell off. Does anyone know where to get these? Or do they come with the wiper refill when you order them?

As far as I know, the big stores around here (NAPA, O'Reilly, Pepboys, etc.) don't carry any refills, just the full plastic blades for more modern cars.

Post a picture of the blade. Too many variations to guess what you've got and what fell off. If its the original blade, then its a 15" ANCO 'push button' which was IMO a clever design. AFIAK the correct refill is only available new in 16". Metal rib on a correct 'refill' as should be 0.380" wide. But yours may have something else, a later replacement, so got to figure out what you got first.

I bought cut to fit blades at my local Advance Auto as you cannot find any 15" blades in a pinch. I wanted to use my original arms so I had no choice. I forgot how long the are, but not long enough for 2-15" sections. frown

Sorry for the lack of response. I am pretty sure I have the original Anco windshield wiper frames. I have replaced the blades before for 16" blades, they don't really work too well and hang off the edge an extra inch. IIRC, I think a fried of mine at the local car show gave me these metal inserts.

Since, I just happen to drive by an O'Reilly on my way home today I checked to see if they had the TricoClassic blades and they had two. It looks like a better quality than my blade; however, I'm not really sure how they attach and don't want to fiddle too much with them in case I need to return them.

So, how do these fit on exactly? It seems like mine have a tab that locks the blade into a fixture where the new ones have a spring clip of sorts.

I thought this was the problem you were trying to solve.

Well, don't toss the Anco anti-lift push button blades - someone will want them.

That was my question, but no one answered it.

Pretty hard without knowing what you had/have.
Now at least its possible to make a guess that the 'metal insert' might have referred to the spring clip used on some universal refills to adapt them to the push-locks. (shown on the right side of this photo). Can't see enough in your photo. It does look like the refill is sticking out an 1" from the blade.

Like I posted above some people appreciate the original stuff so you'll find a buyer if you don't want to keep it. Can't help you on the "classic", never used them.

A Trico 43 series is a universal replacement that although little narrow and a fraction long, is the type I've used in the past. There might be a wider version but I stopped looking after picking up a set of correct old stock.
Something like these should be the correct fit.

But old stock is what it is. Its not for everyone or all situations. Just letting you know its there if you want it.

So, I guess what I'm talking about is the long metal insert that runs all the way across the side of the rubber blade to hold it on the sliders.

If you look closely at my last picture where I compare the new vs old, the right hand side of my old blade sits flush with the end of my frame, whereas the left sticks out about an inch. The few times I had to use my windshield wiper, the rubber blades started to fall off because of this.

If you zoom into the 3rd photo, hard to see, but you can see that the old bracket is held on by a bow tie shaped tab while the new one has a "spring clip" situating it.

Wow....I've made customer wiper blade for customers many times. Are these wipers for a Dart? My 70 B-body wiper blade frames don't come apart from the wiper arms themselves, so re-fill is my only option.

You probably already figured this out, but just cut the blades themselves with a razor & cut the metal inserts along the sides with snips & "done". On my 70, I have a little tab at the end of the wiper backing ("bracket" I think you call it) that I have to "snake" the refill past... sort of a little metal tab that keeps the refill from sliding out the end.

If YOUR wiper arm has a "U-hook" at the end of it, then almost all modern replacement wipers (blade + backing) will fit. "Some" cars need a little plastic adapter/insert for odd-sized "U-hooks" (Mercedes & BMW are like this a lot) and O'Reilly has a case of free adapters behind the counter.

Most of the new replacement blades come with adapters as part of the package.

I could do this method, but I am still missing one side of the metal inserts. I have tabs at both ends of my wiper backing. In order to slide the 16" I had to straighten the tab on one side; hence why I'm having issues with the refills falling off.

I don't recall what I bought a couple of years ago before this 16" refill, but I remember it came with adapters, none of which worked.

I still can't figure out what is missing.
If you're using the original wiper, the original refill is held by the raised section. Here's a picture of a 1970 on FABO

If you're using a different style refill with a spring clip on the end(picture linked in my earlier post), the spring clips come with new ones. The correct refill length is 15".

I have more pictures and possibly some clarification. My last refill, I ordered the wrong length refill as shown. I have a 16" refill blade on a 15" assembly.
