Hello I have a transmission that was given to me and the only thing I know is that it's from an old Mopar. The guy who gave it to me didn't know anything except it was from a Mopar. It was his roomate and he left it there we he moved out. He knew I was into Mopar and contacted me to get it out of there.

Anyway I think it's a 727 going by the trans. fluid pan shape. But here are some pics as well as the number on the LH side pan rail. It measures 35" from bell housing to tail shaft.

Is this SB? BB? Year?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks beer

B-RB. And don't forget to get that right side dowel pin installed back into block before install.

It's out of a 76 or 77 vehicle with a 400.
Date code 11/15/1976 so it's probably a 77.

Your Q has been answered but for future reference, a B/RB 727 will have (4) 1/4" dust cover mounting holes (SB has (2) 1/4" bolt holes) and facing the front of the trans a B/RB trans has a rounded face at the ~9 0'clock position (SB is kind of flat on that side). there is also a C to C dimention difference between the two top mounting bolt holes but I ain't sure what the dimentions are.

Even easier way to tell sb from bb is the dowel pin holes. Small block are straight across from each other. BB the starter side is always higher than the pass. Side. With that said which ones are the dowel holes? Easy the ones that are chamfered!

Thanks to all who have replied. beer

So it looks like I have a 1977 727 for a BB.

Did Chrysler bog down the performance on their 727s as they did on their early HP motors? In other words are the mid to late 70s 727s perform the same as the early 70s 727s?

Again thanks for all of the help thus far.

Later ones have the controlled load front servo. Which you can eliminate by filling the small hole on the servo piston. Kickdown ratio will be lower on the non hipo one. It may only have a 3 clutch front drum instead of the 4 clutch one and I'm sure the governor is lower rpm. But all this can be fixed during a rebuild.

This is some cool stuff. I have 4 or 5 727 transmissions here and wasn't sure of the quickie methods of reference.

IMO, the easiest way to ID BB or SB is by the converter dust cover bolt holes.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

also, the starter nose locator is at 3 o'clock for the big block vs around 4:30 on the small block.
