So I got a steal of a deal on an 07 dakota with the HO 4.7 from an auction, the heads were gone but the rest of the motor looks like new sitting in there, even the guides and chains look awesome but the intake and whole top end is gone. I found an 02 top end complete for real cheap, can I just bolt it all on and make it work? The interchange at the JY says only one head will swap, what could possibly be different? The truck does not have EGR. The intake is supposedly better from reading on the line but can't find any details of would keep me from useing the 02 intake even though the interchange says no way.

My guess would be the wrong head is missing a mounting bolt threaded hole for something, or the existing bolt hole is in the wrong location.

I'd see if whatever bolts onto the heads can be shifted, or holes elongated. If one head is interchangeable, and the other isn't, its has to be because of a mounting bracket, or a clearance issue for something added to the motor. I'd find it hard to believe the wrong head wouldn't function on the motor, but these days, anything is possible. Gene

I do know about the tone ring, the one for the truck was in the truck so I will use it but it is the drivers side head that is allegedly not interchangable.

After fiddling with an 01 and 03 4.7, I believe the difference might be the egr casting on newer trucks that I don't recall seeing on those older units.....drivers side head supposedly. Enjoy Dave, I know you're fond of the 4.7.

I am not fond of them, just happen to have worked on tons of em so I usually know my way around on em, just havent done much swapping amongst those particular years.

Possibly somewhere that deals with engine cores may be able to tell you what is different

Looking at Rockauto I see that Enginetech sells one new head and one remanufactured head from 2000 - 2007, something like that. There's one part number for right and one part number for left.

Allpar says that EGR and knock sensor were added between your two model years.

It's ironic that as much as you dislike the 4.7,, that one should have fallen into your lap!

I can buy super nice trucks all the time like this, I bought this one to size up dropping in a 5.7 but that looks like too much work so I will update everything and put it together and run it for a while or sell it.

In case any one finds this in the future.

Everything bolted on just fine and it is the strongest running 4.7 I have driven. Silky smooth and tons o power, I am tempted to keep it but I just found a ram I think I want instead.

Glad your like you 4.7. I am looking for new heads for mine. So, if anyone can tell me the years that had EGR, I would appreciate it. 2003 in particular. Rock lists them EGR and non EGR for 2003. Then again, they list that on ALL 4.7s.

I still have a 2003 durango, and I'm pretty certain it does not have that special egr casting type head on it.

To hard how?
Motor mounts and custom pan then it's just wiring, hot wire makes that easy, just not cheap.

5.7 in an 02 Dak fits as well as or better than the 4.7 did,now if I would just wire it :-)

who is that guy?

I don't make motor mounts, especially not in a 4x4 that ties the diff to it all also. The 4.7 computer will run the hemi but not optimally but if I was to swap a ram/durango/nitro... computer in than there are all kinds of computer comunication issues or spend a butt load of money on a programmer for the 4.7 computer.

Also on the 02 you better be carefull as they had a 16 tooth crank tone wheel and your existing computer will not run the hemi with it's 32 tooth wheel. If you want to use the later 4.7 ECU you will basically have to re-wire the whole truck as all the computers will no longer talk to each other and you will get a "no buss" warning on your dash and none of your gauges will work if the truck will even start with the security crap.

I have done a lot of swaps and they are never as easy as "just a little welding and fabrication". Everything seems easier reading it on the internet.

I have a friend who is an owner/mechanic. He won't work on 4.7 if it comes to anything internal. The Germans made everything so complicated and he says that many start having problems around 100-125 thousand. He is a die hard Mopar guy but hates 4.7. I had one that got a coolant leak and it died. I would hve fixed it if I could find a 5.2 for my 2001 Durango. He has two in Dakotas thqt both have over 200,000 miles and run great. Hope you have better luck than I did!!
