Replacing a skipped timing chain on a small block and not understanding something:

With both marks on the cam sprocket and crank sprocket facing each other, the rotor is pointed at #6 shruggy

Wha? Shouldn't it be pointed at #1? To get it to #1 the mark is straight up. Am I doing something wrong?

that is correct...cam at 6 o'clock and crank at 12 o'clock...number 6 is firing...

rotate crank once and cam dot will be at 12 noon...number 1 firing...

went installing chain it is easier to eye ball the dots with cam at 6 and crank a 12 noon...

with it rotated once to get at 12/12 on the dots, then back up the dampener to 15 BTDC then turn dist housing till the magnet is dead even with the tooth that places the rotor under the #1 cap terminal. wouldn't hurt to clock the intergear so at that position the rotor is facing forward & slightly to the pass side which lets the plug wires nestle the neatest with the shortest lengths & maintains OE standardization. Not a dealbreaker by any means tho, just my OCD
