I have a 71 RR, 340/416, new everything, including 4 core radiator, shroud and Napa a/c water pump. The car would run great, but after 10 min of driving, or at any stop/idling would begin to overheat...steady right over to H! Then I'd turn it off to cool, the motor would sorta sound like a coffee maker..puff/snort/pfff...upper hose would be at a fast boil, and water would be coming out the overflow, but no where else. I tried new carb; different temp thermostats; timed it up, down and sideways; checked this, checked that, I was certain it was a clogged block/ heads...Then I called Ken Hensley at Hensley Performance. Ken said clogged blocks are down on his list of newly machined motors which overheat. but there's many poor "new" parts-store water pumps out there, and AutoZone type thermostats were not the best choice for well cammed stroker motors....Ken suggested a Milodon high-volume waterpump, and Milodon 160 thermostat, and 12-15 degrees advance inital timing, to let my quick-fuel 770 VS know to give adequate gas,
Problem SOLVED!!! I drove it over one hour, about60 miles with spotlights & a Micky D's drivethough. The motor never when above 175 degrees (and today it was about 70) Plus the motor was quite at shut down, makes me think the motors cooling system was not "sealed" or air-pocket...or blades on the old "new" water pump were slipping.
Anyway, though I'd share this as overheating is very common in our old mopars. I can't thank Ken Hensley enough, my car has been finished for almost two years...except I couldn't drive it for more than about 10-15 minutes. I am so psyched! Tomorrow is supposted to be beautiful here in SC, and the wife and I are going for a CRUSE!
