are you using rustoleum enamel?

I think my orange peel batch wasn't thin enough, but hopefully it will come out with the wetsanding.

What kind of Rustoleum paint did you guys use? I think this idea is great and I'm going to try it. The thing is I went out to buy the paint and almost bought the waterbased Rustoleum (Painters Touch) which is not oil based, but says you can use it on metal?? what caught my eye was that it said thin with water so I stayed away from that and got the other label that says (stops rust)and thins with mineral spirits. Just a thought? It almost screwed me up!!!! Jay.

We did a old catering van with rustoleum white a while back after seeing the guys on Monster Garage do it to an old Milk Truck- we used pretty much the mix ratio talked about here, scuffed it with Scotch Brite and rolled it on!! Every bit as good as a Maaco cheapie job, for about 1/8th the price!! !! The 66 Valiant wagon is getting ready to get a few coats of Bright Red the same way real soon!!

Oh O.K. RCRC I almost did not read the fine print and bought the wrong paint. I'm going to give this a try as soon as possible soon as I prep some of the body. I'm going to go over the old paint on most of my car just rough it up a bit. I'm assuming I can just use some steelwool or scotchbrite pads? Another question is if I decide to do the black hoodstripes in gloss as well as the rest of the car can you wetsand with two colors on the hood or would that be a problem?
Thanks for any responces: Jay

How did you apply it? Was it the same as described here (2 coats, wetsand, 2 coats, wetsand, 2 more coats, wetsand then polish)?

Got any pics?

i finaly got a good coat of paint on one side of the hood i'm painting, thin that paint out boys just like water then go over it after about 5 min with the roller again. i'm buying a spray gun because if the paint is that thin it would probably be a pain to do the sides of a car and if you get one coat with orange peel and don't sand it back smooth you just keep getting the peel look.

If you're going to spray, why not jump up to a cheap single stage. I figured the main advantage to this was you could apply it with a roller, no overspray, etc.

guess it depends on the price of the materials for the single stage paint and how durable the rustoleum is, as soon as this coat dries i'm going to see how chip and scratch resistant it is.

I have my 5th coat done and it looks OK, not as much orange peel as after I first painted it but still too much for my eye, so I went at it with 600 grit and water again.

Now it's smoother, but took a lot of paint off so you can see through it, so it'll be 2 more coats later today, wetsand, then 2 more final coats.

Man do I love this thread. I am new to this forum but found out about it through hybridz.org a wonderful site dedicated to customizing and hot rodding Datsun Z cars as well as other misc topics. Anyhow I am curious how this could be used with satin black paint. Could you wetsand between the coats until you got to the last one and the last one would self level enough for a good satin finish. Obviously you can't wetsand a satin paint and then buff?

600 Grit is way to rough on a top coat. You should be using at least 1000 between coats. Final with 2000.

I am not sure if you are using straight water or not, but I always use just a little dawn in my bucket and spray bottle when wet sanding. Of course I have never used this type of paint. I will give it a try one of these days.

I used the 600 to get (orange peel) material off faster than 1000 or 1500, this is the grit 69charger says to use after the 1st and second coat. I knew it was a rough grit but I didn't mind stepping back a few steps to get the orange peel out.

It worked fine, and I subsequently applied 2 more coats and wetsanded with 1000, and I just applied the 6th/final coat. Tonight I'll wetsand it with 1500 then polish and post pics.

After sanding with 1000, I put some mineral spirits on a rag and wiped the area. If it looks like that after polishing I'll be very happy.

re the soap in the water, does that help the paper glide easier?

i haven't tried soap and water, i see no real advantage, i just use straight water and keep the area really wet, using a spray bottle and spray it down alot, after wetsanding for a bit i have a bucket of water and a shammy i whipe down the surface with while it's still wet, that way it's much eaiser to clean before it dries. and as for the mineral spirits on a wet rag and just whiping it down, yes, that's what it looks like polished, even better, just gives you an idea of what it will look like when finished, that's about the first time you really see the results.

The soap actualy lubricates the paper and it will sand smoother. As far as finish goes I dont think it will make a difference. I have heard it makes the paper last longer though? In any case the main thing is to keep your area saturated. On a side note. I cannot find on the net anywhere where tremclad makes rustoleum and that it is in fact the same product. I was thinking about using valspar tractor and implement enamel from TSC. Any advice or info on that would be great. I was worried about it though because it takes a hardner?
