I have a 2016 Challenger 5.7 shaker car that I bought new and only has 1500 miles on. I have been hearing a tick when I first start it and the other day after sitting for over a week it was really loud to the point I was getting ready to shut it down. However it went away after a few seconds. It is almost like a lifter(s)is bleeding down and pumping back up after start up. Oil level is where it should be.

Anyone else been experiencing this noise?

5.7,Hemi's are notorious for lifter ticks.

A lot...most...new hemis have a lifter tick when you first start them up. My 14 Ram does it from time to time. It stops after a second or two and runs fine. You can Google "Hemi tick" and find a lot of posts about it.

My Jeep with the 5.7 does the same thing, mostly on cold days during warm up.

Just my opinion, but I think it is because the lifter sits horizontal and allows the oil to drain out. Would love to hear from someone with an Accusump on their engine to see if pressurizing the system before starting made this go away. I've worked on them since they were first introduced, and they all have a slight tick. Also have customers with well over 400K on them with no issues, but still the start up tick. I have seen first hand (or actually heard) that anything but a Mopar filter increases the severity and length of time to pump up the lifters.

My 6.1 in the Dart DOES NOT tick at start up. Always have used Wix 51515R filter which has anti drainback. After running it hard you can hear all the lifters at cruise a little.

I've heard a fix for the early 5.7's is installing a 6.1's entire valvetrain (cam, pushrods and springs)

The dealership stated it didn't make the noise when they started it the following day. So I am starting to believe it is the characteristic of the Hemi 5.7. I will use "slick 50" to resolve the problem...only kidding...remember that stuff? I am going to try that Wix oil filter that prevents the oil from draining back. thanks and I will you know if that resolves the issue.
Still a great car and I enjoy it very much!

That filter will not fit your car fyi. Look on their website for one that does that has anti drainback.

Factory tech here, they all do it to some degree, no problem unless it continues after that first 5 seconds of start up

They do have broken exhaust manifold bolt problems thanks to the heat shields.

Pretty basically EVERY oil filter out there has an anti-drainback valve. So saying you will buy a filter with such a valve is no different than saying you are going to buy a filter.

There may be some specialty filters that don't have the check valve but they aren't sold for regular automotive use at your local Autozone or whatever.

I don't think there's any doubt that the Mobil 1 filter is the best filter out there. It is possible that Amsoil or another smaller manufacturer has an equal. But the Mobil 1 has the best filtering media, using synthetic fibers that allow a much tighter control over pore size.

I recently ran across a clearance sale on Wix filters for my daily driver and I'll use them until they're gone, which could be years.

It's really too bad that Walmart blew out the Purolater line earlier this year, as that was a very nice cheap filter.

The Motorcraft and AC filters are right up there with the best cellulose filters.

But any decent filter has a reliable anti drainback valve. The only way to tell if your particular filter is malfunctioning is to watch your oil pressure on startup.

R.

Wix now has a filter out specifically for synthetic oils
