I have a 62 Dodge Polara 500 with tapered axles and 741 case and the third member is making noise. I have a 489 third member from a 69 Fury...will the 489 interchange with the 741 using my tapered or are the splines different?

The 742 was OEM I believe, so originality should not be an issue.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

Open or sure grip in the 62 Polara? There is a difference in the thrust block.

As stated, the thrust block in the differential is different, the '62 open differential axles are longer than the '64 and later. To use the 489 in the '62 you'll have to remove 1/8" from the splined end of each axle shaft.
