All,
I REALLY appreciate all of the info so far.I hope there will be more info. I didnt post anywhere else,Moparts seems to have a lot of good knowledge.
If this engine works out,and does what it needs to do,then I may consider running it in class. No way could I be a record holder, but if somewhat competitive. But that thought is way way way way down the road.I'd have to upgrade my car too,and to be honest,I like bracket racing. I like combos that everyone says cant be done.
I used to race 440 Chryslers...great engines, but everyone turns their noses up at the ol' 318. I really think it can be a good engine. If it doesnt need to go high RPM,I'm good with that. I always heard you had to rev a small block.440's obviously, you dont. I just would like you guys to tell me what the best stuff is to use. I just had 2 restrictions, the heads and the carburetor. And I'd like to go 10.70's.Even the old Direct Connection "bible" has a 10 second 318 combo, but I think it's a stretch there. good luck with that, let us know how that works for you.

My class 340 goes 10.50 at 3400lbs.
Runs good, how much hp did your 340 make on the pump?

Too bad so many of these posts are trying to talk this guy ( "318 racer"!!!!! )in to something other than what he wants to do - and pretty much irrelevant to what he really wants to do. Not that I don't agree with some of the comments, but . . . . . . He doesn't want to race a 340, 360, 390, 408, 416, or a 426! His handle is (DUK)!!!!!!! READ THE OP!! Just trying to help. Sorry I won't make that mistake again and ruffle YOUR feathers. Geeze, I hope not, cause I don't have many feathers left.

So does this have to be a stock stroke deal where it HAS to be 318", or do you just want to run a 318 block? If stock stroke the qwkmopardan seems to have the formula Not really... if he will be running aftermarket heads that should flow a fair bit more.. the cam has to coincide with the flow.. and 7000 inst gonna cut it in a class type engine to 318.... go ask any of those class racers what rpm they turn EDIT also... you dont want a 727.. a 904 is a better trans for that application and if you really want to go all out.. rollerise it... dyno the engine so you know where the torque is for a conv.. it wouldnt surprise me to see about 6000 stall

If I wanted to do that(a 20K build) there are several engine builders that cater to that type of engine, and I would just use them,if I had that kind of cash.
Let's be positive. the positive message is, if you want to run a 318ci motor that will get you in the 10.70s you are going to spend a ton of money. just to build a 318 because you have a few doesn't make any since. you can build a stroker 360/340 for half the money and live longer. like I said go for it if you think it can be done. one member here B3 has a 323ci motor that runs strong maybe he will see this. really I wish you luck.

I fully understand 318Racer's desire to build something challenging, there's nothing wrong with that, but you have to ready yourself for some serious disappointment if it doesn't run the numbers after spending all this money. There are very few stock'ish motors that run like Qwkmopardan, and I believe B3422W5 runs in the 11.20's with his 323" motor but it was well sorted out in the engine masters program if I remember correctly. My 346" motor in my 3200 pound scamp only went 11.70's with stage2 Eddy heads and Ross dome pistons, it was a street car with mechanical water pump and fan but it still had 4.56 gears and trapped at 7200. I switched to a 400 block and 440 crank(451)and went 9.80's and had alot more fun for the money. You might be able to do alot of homework and get all the right parts and make the 10.70's happen but it won't be easy.

I'd like to go 10.70's.Even the old Direct Connection "bible" has a 10 second 318 combo, but I think it's a stretch there. I started racing using the Direct Connection recipe's from stock down into the 10 second bracket. They were very accurate for my 440 powered Cuda. 9 seconds, not so much. The only thing you are missing is that (in my book, anyway) the 318 10 second build needs the car to weigh in at 2850. You have the right tranny, right gears, right SIZE carb, and if you can get the heads flowed properly. I don't know comparisons of W2 heads to Eddies. So your powertrain looks on track, but car needs a diet.

Not interested in other combos.. A 318 is nothing but a 340 with 22 less ci by bore, what you're wanting to accomplish while keeping a reasonable budget is quite attainable, the Super Stock 318 heads only flow about 240 cfm @ 28". I'd send a PM to member W5DART66 to see if he'd be interested in doing your heads, along with recommending a cam and other parts. He has experience making big steam with the 318 OE based block platform.

What you decide to run with for heads, intake and carb will pretty much set the max rpm and power you can achieve. Stock heads ,even fully ported, will limit airflow quite a bit and the torque peak will be much lower than a larger port head. The choice of those items will then help you pick the cam and headers, and how much you have to work on the oil system. The first thing to do is to set your budget. That will tell you how much you can dedicate to heads and head work. A lot of the other parts are going to be the same price, or close. Sticking with the 750 might limit your head choice as well. That is something to talk over with a good engine builder.
