I have broke 3 transmissions in 2 years. They are 18 spline 833 4speeds. It is always the 3rd gear, on the countershaft. It usually does not hurt the 3rd drive gear. This last time it did thou. They are all in street cars, making about 720 hp/660 tq. I don't speed shift, or have sticky tires. It always happens when it hooks in 3rd gear.

I know everybody is going to say get a Lenco, but I cant cut the cars. Is there anything I can do to help? Would the gear oil matter? I use 80/90 gear oil now. Is there anything you can do to the gears to strengthen them? I will be buying another countershaft, and drive gear tomorrow. Can you send them out for treatment? This is getting expensive, and the counter shafts are getting harder to find.

Lastly, I see they make a Chinese countershaft frown anybody have any luck with them? Harder to find originals anymore.....

Are you shearing off the teeth on the counter or
just tearing them up(slowly eating them off)

Deflection. At that power you're literally driving the gears apart. If the 833 had a 2-3 bearing support like most aftermarket stuff it would help a lot, but then gear size would probably become the next issue.

I used cryo, mikronite, three different styles of cases and new/used gears/counter shafts. Either drop your power level or get a different trans. I put lencos right there with auto's.lol

There's nothing you can't put back if you put a g-force or jerico in it.
Good luck.

Hey Mr P body. They just keep breaking the teeth off. The rest of the trans looks very good.I don't think it is a wear problem. Would a thicker gear oil help, maybe 140 wt?

this is the pic or the damage this time...

It could but since your on your 3rd set.. I doubt it

that your breaking 3rd on street tires.. but then you
say... when it hooks(spinning)

It spins in the lower part of 3rd. I will lift a little, then roll back in. That stops the spin, but that is when the trans breaks. The last few times, when I would lift, I would stab it back to the floor. That was when it would seem to want to break the most. I have since started to ease back in, that has helped a lot.... But still breaking them...

I don't mind cutting sheet metal, just don't want to cut anything structural.

The gear is brittle already so you dont want to
add more hardness.. if you wanted to do some R&D
you could take some heat treat out of it.. but
you have to get the base rockwell C on the gear
your using then try a couple of rockwell C less
EDIT
I would bet right now its 60-61 rockwell C

Sucks to see your breakage. I've got 4 paperweights just like that.

The one thing you could be doing, it sounds like, is when the car spins your unloading then reloading and slamming everything back together. Thicker gear oil might help, but I bet you keep breaking them.

The worst thing you might have to modify on an e body is the upper trans crossmember. This will be least with the previous two trans, and to put a Lenco or Nash will require quite a bit of modification.

If you change your driving style it sounds like will be the best bet if you want to keep an 833. Or throw away two plug wires.

thanks 68shifter. I am going to call about these trans tomorrow. If they hold, it will be cheaper in the long run...

I assume your using a single disk clutch.. might
look into a dual disk for a little slip.. years
ago when I was racing a 833 I made a rock crusher
and had to soften up the gear.. I pulled 2 rockwell
C out of it with the advise of some old racers.. but
being your a street car you dont want a crusher
EDIT
Your issue is the letting off and hitting it..and
it bits

My last 833 trans had cryo softened gears from Liberty's and they lasted over 60 passes. I will note though when I put that trans in I also changed my clutch with an adjustable unit with a bronze disc.It allowed just enough slippage to keep that transmission in one piece and it was still in use when I installed the Richmond 5-speed.

The last 833 I broke was using a Mcleod Street Twin. That clutch is a ZERO slip unit and will continue to eat factory transmissions. I sold mine and went to a single adjustable unit and life was good again.

I broke 3 tranys (3rd Gear)
I started asking Liberty and other transmission guys what to do. I ended up buying a Richmond 5 Speed. It don't fit very well but it has been in the car since 2005 with no issues.

I was reading about the Legend SST 5 speed transmission. Says it will handle 700 ftlbs. Looks like a really nice piece! Anybody try one yet?

The hidden costs will add up quick when using that transmission and you better pray it doesn't break because some parts may be hard to find twocents

As posted above the Richmond is strong but it takes some cutting to fit with a custom made crossmember.
A GF5R is a nice box from G-force shruggy
