904 converter has 122 teeth on the ring gear, 727 has 130.

The bellhousing and starter location is smaller on the 904 to accommodate the 904-122 ring gear

Its weird because i had to grind the side of my block to fit the starter with the 727. So as soon as i saw the smaller ring gear i got worried but the starter fits

I run a 904, and had to grind my Magnum block for the starter to fit, But fit ok on my R block with out grinding.

I know everyone will find this surprising, but I run a R-3 block with a 904 and I had to grind the block a little to get the starter to bolt up flush to the transmission.

So like everything else, your mileage may vary!
