Anyone ever cut a 440 intake to fit on 400?

I have a 440 Super Victor on my 400 stroker, but I do have Stage 6 heads on it.

I don't know if you can. You might end up rewelding the flanges on the bottom of the runners. That's a lot of metal to remove. Unless you put it on a raised port head like mentioned.

Always consider the cost and time involved against all the choises of manifoilds that are available. It it's a matter of having a 440 intake then sale it and use the funds for the correct manifold. We have extensively modified many manifolds over the years and haven't see any dramatic increase over massaged production manifolds.Even with sheet metal manifolds the bit of increased power is minimal compared to the cost.

no not unless you have Stage VI heads.

The valley plate at the china wall of an RB is about a solid inch wider than a B, so you'd need a pretty thick mating flange on both sides to start with. My gut would say probably not unless you had deep pockets to weld up the flanges.

There was a super stock 383 car in the early 80's where the guy used a much modded SB Chevy manifold on it, can't remember his name though and I would like to see how he accounted for the differences in bore spacing and port alignment, but apparently he successfully worked it out.

I have a 337 RB on my 400B/517 Stroker... but (as stated) it's on a set of the Chapman Stage VI's

Not dimensionally a good forseeable venture. The intake surface would be nearly gone.

I have done it the other way, 383 on a 426 max. The more I think about what you want to do, the more I say no way. Can't see the advantage IMO.

Wize, there probably were 1.5" thick spacers between the SBC intake and the heads. You can move quite a bit in that distance.

It's been done. There's mention of this modification, in the Direct Connection Engine Book, with the Weiand Cross Ram RB manifold that was popular in Super Stock.
It would take quite a bit of material removal. You may also consider removing material from the cylinder head, but this would require some custom work on the valley pan.

You may also get away with cutting a single plane in half and trimming material from the middle, welding it up, and then relocating the carburetor base holes.
I've considered it for the 337 manifold on my 432. I'll probably stick with my STR15.

Do you have a pic of the modified Weiand?

I know a guy that has a sbc manifold that was cut up and modified to fit his 383 Superstock car. So anything is possible if you want.

I did a little math, that is to say my wife, the math teacher, did a little math for me. The difference in width between the RB manifold and the B manifold is 1.06 inches. So to fit an RB manifold on the B block would require the removal of approximately .53 inches of material from each side of the manifold.

Get a second opinion on the numbers before you cut. I've been known to be wrong before...once, but it happened.

Not sure if it works the same way but when I put the 383 intake on the high block I used a 1 inch spacer to allow the bolts to line up. Maybe as it gets closer to the crank that dimension gets smaller.

It does.. thats why you have to cut the intake
surface when you cut the head so the intake will
bolt back on
wave
