I'm thinking about selling my A-body rear, and buying a Dana 60. I know nothing about a Dana period. What makes it stronger exactly? I know it's heavier, but that's not an issue.

Oh, and do they have retainer plates like the 8 3/4, or c-clips?

Sorry for dumb questions.

Large ring gear, well placed pinion gear, strong, beefy center housing, large bearings, thicker axle tubes and plentiful and cheap(3/4 ton trucks) Retainers like 8-3/4

After you blow up several 8 3/4 units ( which have a place in racing just not with big blocks and slicks ) you will have spent enough to buy a Dana. Buy the Dana , race it your entire career the take it out and sell it. If you sell all your 8 3/4 suregrips and gears first then buy the Dana --you will actually wind up ahead of the game--WAY ahead. Remember that every time you kill a rear or drive shaft etc you also kill an over running clutch and or converter If you have a small block and already have 8 3/4 stuff go for it--otherwise you are CRAZY not to go Dana 60 in a HOSS! This is not my two cents worth this is actual scientific conclusion from extensive testing ( I mean $$ spending )

I`m the rare bird that`s been running 8 3/4`s since the early 90`s w/out ever breaking anything and for the last 8+ years have been from very low 11`s to now low 10`s high 9`s (based on my 6.26 1/8`th pass).

WOW, I guess I better sell my 8 3/4 now... I dont
want to be called CRAZY. Have you seen any diggers
with the 8 3/4. IMO(which doesnt mean much) its the
weight that kills a 8 3/4 and in the extensive testing
I'm sure that came up

Well I have a full bodied 68 Dart, with a stroked 440. 727 with a manual valve body, and no transbrake.

The 8 3/4" has been in there for 5 years now, with three or four races each season, but behind a mild 360, and Hoosier Quick Times. Of course it has held up just fine.

Now that I have the new powerplant in, I'm gonna probably use some 29 or 30 inch tall slicks, maybe 10 or 11 inches wide. Just don't want to hurt the new trans by blowing up the rear. Paranoid maybe

Anyone dealt with DTS before?

I raced and street drove my 83/4 for 5 years no ring gear problems but the housing would bend twice a year,I could streighten it in about a hour and a half 3500 lb car with a big block 50 runs a year.Yes thats with a back brace.

All my 4 speed cars would use up an 8 3/4 pretty quick on the street...but I power shifted those cars all the time...
I bought the Strange gear setting tool back in the late 70's...use to do at least 12 a month for friends and customers...The only good thing out of Direct Connection back then was their $99.00 gear sets.Strange gears sets with their markings ground off...those were the days.

I thought the 8 3/4 was strong too. Then I put big tires under my car. Guess where the weak point was.

The Dana 60 came in several different versions in the Mopar production cars, the main differences was the axle size and spline count on the axles. The 1970-71 cars with stock Dana 60 came with 35 spline axles that are a lot bigger in diameter than any other production rear end installed in production cars. The cutom made race versions that Strange Engr. and almost everyone else sells today come with the 35 spline axles, as already said the pinion shaft is thicker, the ring gear diameter is bigger and the cast steel housing and pressed in large diameter axle tubes are strong pretty good stuff Way better than any stock Ford nine inch beef up, IMO

I wish you 8 3/4 bashers would just soon get a life, or maybe just learn how to set them up. Every part has a limit and I know of many many many, did I say many, 3000lb plus cars with slicks going very quick with 8 3/4 rears without any issues.
For your setup, an 8 3/4 will be fine...
Until you go consistant 8 second passes, or consistant sub 1.2 60ft times, you got nothing to worry about. Just buy new stuff, and go have fun.

every time i'm under my car, i spend time gazing at mr. 60, mr. dana 60, with awe and admiration. he's HUGE. he's indefatigable. he's a little overweight, but only by about 15 pounds. he'll always be there for me. and that's why he's better.

for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?

When set up properly the 8 3/4 can be a good piece. With that being said, for a heavy , fast car, the Dana is with out question the only way to go.

My Dana added 38lbs to my car over the 8 3/4 that was in it. Same setup. Both had Clutch Sure Grips in them. Both were narrowed, but by the same amount.

My 8 3/4 never gave me any troubles and I was actually sorry to see it go, but I felt that I needed to step up to a Dana due to putting a stick in front. With the Automatic, I would never have thought twice about running the 8 3/4 for my setup.

Oh Great One;
Why do you bother posting about this? You don't even have a car. And what in the crap do you know about putting power to the ground? You drive a friends 1000 lb dragster with a steam roller tire and all the weight over the rear axle. How hard is that to make hook. OOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHH
If you could read, I said I know of many cars going eights and nines at over 3000 lbs. So Oh Great One, you think these guys don't know how to put power to the ground? And most of these guys I know are small tire guys that probably have better 60 ft times than that thing you drive.
You should wear a bowtie, because you fit right in with that croud.
