Ok guys, I found my engine is missing the oil galley plug by the distributor. The outer plug on back of the engine has a square opening for a socket. I have been looking everywhere to buy a socket,I cannot find one. What the heck do you use to get it out. It is smaller than a 3/8 rachet, and larger than a 1/4 rachet.

I made mine... milled down a 3/8 square steel bar
stock.. once its out put in a allen head plug... you
could sand down a piece of 3/8 square if you have a
grinder or a belt sander
wave

I was in a bind once and took a 1/2 inch hex head bolt and taper ground four sides with my bench grinder on the threaded side. Worked great as I could use a socket or open end wrench on the hex end

I use a square punch or chisel that fits tight into those plugs and then a crescent wrench to turn the square part thumbs scope Some of the SB inner oil galley oilplugs use the same type of oil galley plugs the next size smaller, some use a standard allen head size pipe plug shruggy

I took an old extension and ground on it a bit. worked like a champ.

It's 5/16". Snap On sells a tool for it.

If it's 5/16, you could get a piece of 5/16 keystock from Lowes, Home Depot or Tractor Supply then use a wrench on it. I'm sure it's not as tough as the snap-on tool but might do the trick in a pinch twocents

Use a piece of 5/16 keystock. Heat the plug to red hot. Let it cool a bit. Hit it with some WD40 or rub some parrafin on it. Use the keystock and your hand to back the plug out.

Heat the PLUG, not the BLOCK.

Thanks far all the replys, I got it out using a large flat screwdriver that fit tight in the corners and put my pipe wrench on the end, it came right out.

GREAT job. I love it when hot rodders use some ingenuity instead of rushing out to buy a SPECIAL tool to do every job.

I have an allen wrench that was close to being the right size. Just ground the end down square to fit the plug and cut it off short so it fits in a socket. Use it w/ a ratchet and takes em right out.

Probably is a 8mm square plug. Pep Boys auto parts sells 8mm & 10mm square head 3/8" drive sockets for about 5 bucks ea. Or check the internet. www.ctatools.com. Just used them on my motor. Perfect fit.

can't find it on their site now, but Harbor Freight used to sell a drain plug bit set that included the 5/16 square. That's what I use.

BTW, I would not recommend replacing the square plugs with a mopar perf hex allen head plug (especially on the large plugs).

They tend to strip easily when you try to remove them.
