Recently we were trying to get my friend's 62 Valiant Wagon /6 running. Every time you crank it over, as soon as you get any king of spark, the starter seems to disengage from the flywheel, but continues to spin as the key is turned. This is becoming annoying because the car has been sitting and needs that bit of extra starter help to get it going. Has anyone else encountered this and is there a way to bypass? Is it just in need of a new starter? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Starter is bad. Time for a new one.

The flux capacitor is good as it is putting out the required 1.21 gigawatts. Whilst at it I checked the turn signal fluid, muffler bearing, and even the glasspacks on the mufflers.

The bendix is kicking out.Years ago we
took them apart and fixed them as starters were pricey. Now they are cheap.Try a mini and you will never go back to the old starter.Rocky

Amen to the Nipondenso mini-starter. I think that any of the newer ones from those found on the minivan V6s to the 5.7 Hemi in the trucks are all the same...but I could be wrong, I often am.

I put one of the Mopar mini-starters on my '64 Polara's 440 motor and it is still going strong, 19 years later.

Yep...

Bolted mine in, in '94...

Sure sounds like starter here too. Way back in my towing days, the old one cable fords were king of the kickout during startup.

Check the starter for a 61 or 62 date, they are hard to find. 62 was first year of aluminum torqueflight and the gear reduction starters.

Prior owner of my car turned in the 61 starter as core, had to get his 10 bux back pronto. He didn't think to turn in a junker corroded starter instead.
