I am finding the limit of an 8.75.

My question is, can I retain my current 35spline axles if the Dana 60 is built to the same length and pinion offset? The axles currently butt together using the standard adjuster bearing, I just couldn't tell you how far the protrude past the splines in the spool right now without pulling them out again.

Anyone have any experience in this?

Yes, you will need a 35 spine spool, and it would be a good time to do green bearings. That's what I was planning on doing with mine, but I think I'm going aluminum center section..

Side note, what are you breaking on the 8.75? How much power and what weight? What gear manufacturer?

Run 9.30 so far at 3100lb with a 572 Wedge on 10.5 tyre. Had Richmond gears that have done a reasonable amount of work but mainly with less power running around mind to high 9's with a 500ci engine (done maybe 30-40 passes with this engine and another of similar power). The Richmonds were getting cracks in the pinion teeth, I picked up noise when getting towed on the return road

Recently put a factory set in and they started peeling as soon as i got on the loud pedal...

I've been 6.0 in the 1/8 @3600 with a 30 year old factory 3.23 gear. I set it up with about .003 backlash, it's so quiet I can hear my fuel pump at cruising speeds. I'm starting to worry about it though. I'd lke to go 60, but it's more weight I don't need

When I made this swap we made the Dana 1" narrower. This allows the long side of the Dana to have correct spline engagement due to it's 1 3/16" pinion offset.

The answer is MAYBE.

The driver side axle on a D60 should be 1.375 longer than pass side to get proper pinion offset. 8.75 axles should be equal length if everything is correct.

Measure the current axle lengths and figure out from there.

Thanks for the reply guys.

I found this awesome website with gave me all the measurements needed http://www.doctordiff.com/axle-calculator/

And after pulling the 727 out after the sprag let go I pulled the axles and measured everything.

And switching to Dana 60 I should have 1/4 inch spare on the Drivers side (long) and about 1-1/2 on the short.

Think i am lucky these were set up to butt together and cut at these lengths.

I don't have the normal 1-3/16 pinion offset to begin with.

Anyway looks like I'm all good.

If the axles are the same length, the pinion offset is 1 3/16". The pinion offset for an 8.75 rear is taken up in the pumpkin, not any housing offset like a D60.
