Strange axels have a much shorter hub(narrower) than the factory axels. The wheels I'm using are steels. The car has drum brakes and the hubs do not protrude into the rim at all.
My belief is that it does not matter as the wheels are lug centric.
This is no different than my centerline wheels on the Cuda(the hub does not protrude into the rim either)and the lugs on those rims also center the rim except instead of a conical lug it uses a collared one.
A friends believes I'm going to shear off the wheel studs at the track. So please help me settle this. He keeps referring to hub centric wheels and I've explained that older Mopars did not use those.

None of the wheels on either of my cars fit the axle hub.

Never been an issue.

Hub centric is preferred and most OEM wheels are done that way, but a lot of aftermarket wheels use a big "one size fits all" center hole.

I always designed my brake kits to be hub centric but most vendors don't bother.

hub centricis [censored], the wheels i mount at work all come with those plastic hub centric doo hickeys and i throw them all in the trash, if using an acorn lug or shank style they arent necessary

There are probally not a handfull of race cars of all types racing in the world today that use hub encentric wheels for racing

The factory does it and it is better...but the factory
offers maybe 3 wheels to choose from.. aftermarket stuff
has 100s and they just offer bolt pattern.. they dont care
about the hub... if you keep them tight you wont have a problem

Thanks guys that was exactly what I thought. The friend is my boss who is more into newer cars and is used to everything being hub centric. Just wanted to confirm(yeah I will probably rub it in a little. He's a good guy and gives as well as he takes). As always you guys pulled thru.

Your boss may not understand this, but here goes.....
Hubcentric is to make sure the wheels are directly centered on the axles. Once the lugs are torqued down, the wheel is kept from moving on the hub by the friction between wheel and hub. That's why torqueing the nuts is so important.

Modern manufacturing processes are so precise that the lugs and holes in the wheels do an adequate job of centering the wheel. Most aftermarket wheels except the specially expensive ones douse a one-size-fits all center bore. No problems have arisen from this arrangement.

Think about it - if the hub was in any sort of shear, the little plastic spacers wouldn't do anything.
