Replace the other 4 ignition wires. Fuel delivery issues as in "not enough" - even though the float level is ok.

My 360 gives off a popping sound through the exhaust I can't track down. Also it will idle good for a minute then slowly get rough and I cant get the RPM over 5000 RPM going down the track and starts cackling around 3000 like having a miss.
The engine is a 360 with speed pro flat tops stock heads, lunati voodoo 268 cam with the correct valve springs and pressures. Holley 650 DP on a crosswinds airgap intake. The ignition is a Mallory hyfire 6al and a MP dizzy.
Thing I ruled out or swapped
1 The dizzy 2 checked the cam lobes and lifter they are good 3 no broken valve springs 4new wires, cap, rotor, and plugs 5 timing at 35 degrees at 3000 rpm (doesn't matter where I set it, it popps. 6 intermediate shaft clocked correctly 7 ignition box (swapped with a know good one) 8 engine and chassis grounds 9 carb float levels good
I have the engine running a bit rich plugs were dark but 3 of the plugs were wet with fuel. Will running way rich cause this problem with the popping and not getting it to go over 5000 at the track? Vacuum leak? NEW plugs and get a wideband so you have a direction to go based on your readings and what fuel pump do you run......

push rods to long, if this is a hydraulic cam the lifter pumps up and hangs the valves open. amhik...... Not the pushrods, Ive ran them with the this cam before I swapped out to the MP solid. Never had an issue

New plugs, and I'm using a Holley blue pump and set at 5 PSI on the regulator.

Does your carb have air bleeds... if so check for a plugged one... is this a fresh engine I'll check the air bleeds then swap on a new HP750 off a known good engine. Engine isn't new, rebuilt it 12 years ago but has been refreshed about 3 years ago (rings and bearings) it's been run kind of hard but has less that 10K miles

Does your carb have air bleeds... if so check for a plugged one... is this a fresh engine UPDATE: Went through the carb, airbleeds are clean. I thought I found the problem with the needle and seat. I upgraded to a .130 one. I cannot get this engine above 5500 RPM whether running it down the track or popping it in neutral and stomping the gas. One thing that did happen was on my 3rd pass of the night it blew the vacuum plug off the base of the carb. The car didn't seem to backfire but how can a very tight rubber cap with a vacuum sucking on it blow off? Exhaust valve not sealing at higher RPM? My compression test read good. Maybe the pushrods are too long like 360 904 said.

Lean= pop in the intake Rich= pop in the exhaust If you're getting pops in the exhaust, there is un burned fuel going through the engine. Look at ignition, and/ or extreme rich mixture.

(1) carb issue (2) vac leak. swap on another carb even a stock one & you'll have an answer quick. Not it?, then (I'd) replace the intake gaskets with the felpro ones with the blue borders around the port openings with permatex 99MA spray glue/cement & toss the cork end gaskets (most are too tall & can hold the intake up/depends on prior milling etc) & use "the right stuff" cement instead EDIT swap a coil FIRST! (easy)
