The trans has too much moving inside when the car is moving. When you just basically throw a wrench into the gears it does not end well. I am not surprised to see a trans issue after a rear locking. If all you did was swap the member, the trans is collateral damage if its having issues too.

Took the 62 Plymouth out awhile back and BAM car stopped in it's tracks. Rear locked up. Pulled everything and found the pinion bearing had seized itself to the pinion. Replaced the 3rd member and now realize won't move in 2nd or drive. Major slipping and can feel engage but no go. Looks like I'll replacing a transmission. Is this common when a rear locks up? Was only going around 10 mph from a stop sign so feel lucky didn't do more damage. Something sound fishy to me? You sure the pinion bearing caused the rear to lock? Wouldn't the pinion bearing have to be welded/ seized in the third member to lock up the rear? or was it? Maybe it was the trans the whole time? Or not?
