I was looking for the brace that goes behind the mirior on our
71 charger. It came with duel chrome racing miriors
It lines up perfict with driver door and thought only one door had a brace so walk to other side......hmmmmm not even close
Feel the back side of door skin. No brace. And no other holes ever drilled...
Get the mirior. It and the holes on passenger side have a 5 inch spacing. Driver side is 3 inch....what the heck???
These are the orignal miriors and doors to the car
Also the skin on passenger side is all holds the mirror on
And is a smaller holes then then the driver side wich has a plate..... are all 71 b bodys like this? A mid year change?

Not sure if I have a good explanation, but the Right Side Rally Mirror was Optional equipment or came on certain packaged optional models.

My '71 SE only had the Left Side Mirror from the factory.

I bought a Factory Right side Mirror for my car in the late 1970's at a local Dodge Dealer. Mounted it myself by drilling holes and using the included mounting hardware. As best I recall, there was a reinforcing backing plate with this Right side mirror, but this Right Side mirror did not include a cable remote like the Left mirror from the factory installation.

Just thinking that the Left Mirror being required equipment had more effort put into design and planning than the Right side mirror.

your drivers mirror is original. your right side mirror isn't original equipment.
it's from maybe from a 72 or defiantly a 73-74 mirror, I forget the year when they changed.
the later mirrors look the same but the mount holes are spaced wider apart.

71 and 72 mirrors use the smaller 3"ish mounting.
73 and 74 Mirrors use the longer 5"ish mounting.

Both sides/both styles used a mounting plate inside the door to mount the mirrors to.

Sounds like your passenger mirror is a 73/4 and you are missing the mounting plate for the pass. side.

My SPD 201 Charger R/T has factory well nuts on the left(drivers) door to mount the side mirror. The original mirror was a non-racing style which are not as heavy as the racing mirrors. This made me wonder if the backing plates were used for extra support for the heavier racing side mirrors? But I've never run across any indication of that in print anywhere.

Hey Stranger! wave
My R/T was the same setup as yours....single chrome, manual adjust mirror. I believe you are correct on the single (non-sport mirror) cars not using a plate.

However, all sport mirrors, originally had a plate behind them. smile

My 71 Bee has a left chrome racing mirror and if I remember correctly it has the nuts as well. Bought a junk yard right mirror from a 72 and that one has the plate.

I have used the later backing plate '73-'74 on the passenger side my '71 Satellite. You just need to cut out a portion of the wider spaced plate with a band saw and weld it back together making sure that the screws go in straight. Don't try to just screw it into the door sheet metal, because it will work loose and give you problems.

Were the passenger door and mirror replaced with 73-4 parts? That is the later big spacing on the mirror.

No. Original paint both doors. The passenger side does/did not have brace behind the skin. Only thing I can think of is someone back in the day decided to add a passenger mirrior

You didn't ask, but Soff Seal had gaskets if you need them. CH2031R was the pass side. The holes may be off due to the screw hole mounting location between the years so be aware of that.
