What I have is a 1964 Dodge Polara with a ball and trunnion drive shaft in need of a boot.
I would like to have it converted to the style using a universal joint eliminating the ball and trunnion.
Any ideas or experience with a drive shaft service that can do this?
I am located south of Detroit.

Thanks
John

The only way the I know to use a drive shaft with a front U-Joint would be to have the output shaft of the tranny changed over to the 65 and newer spline shaft. I went through the same issue on my 64 Belvedere. When I had my tranny rebuilt the shop guy told me I could switch over to the modern drive shaft if I could supply him with a output shaft from a later trans. I had no access to one, so I'm still running the ball and trunnion shaft.

I used a Dorman 614 002 universal cv boot kit on last `64 Fury I did and worked great.

I've had a local shop make a new driveshaft based on the specs of the old B&T-driveshaft.;

Just FYI the ball and trunion design is quite strong, stronger than a reg u joint if I recall.....So if a CV boot will work save yourself $$Hundreds and use it.

Take care,

Not really an upgrade. If you need a boot www.oldmoparts.com has the correct ones and not a CV joint on that may not work as well.

Don't be the exception.

Rick you are right the B&T is strong.My 65 broke quite a few rear joints but still has the OE front.My kids 62 300 was the same way.I still have the oe boot on mine.I used a leather replacement boot on my 57 Chrysler and it worked good.I think I have one NOS repair kit.Might even have the shaft from the 62 as my kid went to new trans and Dennys shaft.Rocky

Upgrade for me I am to old to lay on the garage floor and remove the drive shaft. Yes I have done it and it did not last for whatever reason. The modification is my fix.

Thanks for all the replies.

When I got my '64 Polara it had the keyed axle in the back and the B&T front u-joint. I did not like either one and built a Dana 60 for the rear and had a local 727 guru build my 727 with a '65 extension housing and mainshaft that allowed a slip yoke driveshaft that I also had made up. It was never my daily driver, I had the money then to do it and friends to help with the engineering. I was also 18 years younger, that helped a lot.

I am still playing with Mopars and now I have a better place to do it

i agree with rocky. the other thing i have seen in these joints has been when guys replace them that don't know what they are doing, they get fubared and end up off centered, which makes 'em short lived.
