I was getting a rotten egg smell in my car this weekend at the track while driving to the staging lanes, it was only in the car for a minute or so. First thought the battery was going bad so took one out of tow vehicle and still had it. Took the belt off the alternator and unhooked the charge wire from alternator and battery and the smell is still there. I am running E-85 in the car, been running it for 6 years and have not had any smells before. Transmission or engine oil does not smell. Have a crank case evac system on it. Looking for any ideas on what it could be. Thanks in advance.

I had that happen before. Had a bad connection in the bulkhead plug on the fire wall. Wire got hot, but it didn't smell like an electrical odor. Maybe check wiring & fuse box. Might be a dead mouse too, lol.

It is the battery...When batteries "cook" they produce a very sulfuric odor. If you have an alternator it is over charging the battery! Possibly the odor was lingering. Put a voltmeter on the car while running with alternator hooked up and see what you get. My bet is it is the alternator/voltage reg something is telling it to put out to much voltage, cold be a connection to the batter as well.

I had a really strange smell in my car a few years back. It turned out to be my Holly Blue fuel pump eating itself. Maybe take a quick sniff of your pump!

You could also examine the battery as well. Look for signs of it swelling, if it has then it has been overcharged.

Thanks guys. Going to check all of my electrical connections to make sure they are tight. On Sunday I did not run with the alternator at all, no belt and wire unhooked. Had a different battery in car also and still had the smell. Second battery is only a year old, I know that doesn't always mean anything though. No cat converter. Just looking for ideas what to check. Thanks again!

What 'should' the voltmeter read? I have a Toyota Denso alternator and it is always at 14 volts, someone told me it shouldn't be that high at all times but I haven't had any problems and it's the best charging system I've ever owned, battery never struggles or runs low like every setup I've had in the past.
