if the bands aren't worn out (you can tell this by the adjustment if you have to turn in the bolt all the way then they are worn out)and isn't slipping then 99% of the time the governor solenoid is bad/going bad. Go on ebay and search for the borg warner gov. solenoid as it is a larger solenoid and will handle higher presures better and last longer. What happens is the solenoid exhausts itself on when first start to reset the posistion at the same spot everytime. well they get weak or stick from debris, the stock solenoid is weak and and can't operate at the lower speeds which use lower voltage levels to move the solenoid to shift the gears. I would get a borg warner govenor solenoid and mopar governor pressure sensor and replace both of them at the same time. They are easy to replace as they are held by a bracket on the side of the valve body.

It does not seem to be slipping. Also, it is fine when cold and starts doing it when it warms up. So, are both the sensor and the solenoid on the valve body? Yes the sensor is up on the side while the solenoid is pointing down you can't miss them and are very easy to change once you drop the pan. Might aswell change the filter and adjust bands while replacing the sensors.

OK. Thanks! Any tips to get it down the track faster? It has air filter, exhaust, and drag radials. Best run is a 14.96.
Yeah, nitrous! LOL!

Well thank you too! Jut about to change my trans oil and filter. How do you adjust the bands. Matt If stock ratio lever on kick down band, tighten to 72inch lbs. and back off 2 1/2 turbs for the kick down band(on driver side of case above front oil cooler line fitting. Low/reverse band have to have the oil pan dropped and adjust it to 72inchlbs. and then back off two turns.

Thank you once again Forgot to mention I have a 2003 dakota 2wd with a 4.7. Are the parts Numbers and the adjustements the same? 22958 for the soleniod? I believe my trans is the 45fre. Thx Matt

Thx Matt NO! the 45rfe behind that 4.7 is completely different from the 46re I posted. They do not have band adjustments, just replace the filter and fill with transmission fluid.

1-2 shift, or 2-3 shift? Kind of important to know...... 1-2 I'd be leaning toward a neglected kick down band. 2-3 front clutch piston retainer seals. Fixed many a 1-2 shift issue when it involves having to let off the throttle to get it to shift with the governor solenoid. front clutch piston retainer seals?? I know the piston retainer not having enough return springs can cause a shift flare on the 2-3 shift.

it there is a shiftkit in the trans the bumped linepressure could mess upp the pressure reading for the ecu .there is a mod to put a resistor in the wiringharness fooling the ecu to think there is oem pressure there is a simple box for the dieseltrucks that could be used (it have a adjustible resistor) but i dont remebere the brand right now.
the shift kits for the 46re will typically come with this resistor, I'm conservitive on the line pressure with them if they don't have the extra upgrades needed like borg warner governor solenoid, teflon seal rings and the extra springs in the front clutch. The stock solenoid can't handle the etra line pressure and will eventualy start stick and causing 1-2 shift issues and the 2-3 shift will typically flare without the added clutch retainer springs.
