Mechanical fuel pump - cam rod ( missing ? )
My 73 charger has a 440. I'm replacing the electric fuel pump that came with the car. Removing the block off plate -
Am I missing the rod inside the block? With finger in all around and with allen screw out cannot see it?
Only thing I can feel is the block casting and the timing chain?

Huges engines sells a hardened one. http://www.hughesengines.com/Index/produ...mp;partid=10201 Stay away from the Mopar performance rods they had a bad batch of soft ones. This is the one out of my Hemi not many miles on it and chewed away already. I replaced it with the one from Hughes. I can't really say how it's doing as I haven't looked at it since installing it.

Question.....
Once I get the part... about the install - I insert thru the top? how will I know when its in?
I should be looking for a hole to drop it in to fit right?

I ain't up on BB intricasies but iirc you (1) pull the pipe plug (2) install the rod all the way up thru that (pipe plug) hole till it is seated with some grease on the leading end of it to hold it up there (3) replace the pipe plug (4) install the pump with the arm under the rod

Hey I appreciate that & you musta got lucky & the cam lobe that actuates the rod was on the base circle! I had forgotten all about that (been on SB's for decades now but a 451 is in the works)

I had forgotten all about that (been on SB's for decades now but a 451 is in the works) Either luck ( for the first time ) or I will be in trouble when I go to start her up@#&^? The screws --- like others have said where about 1/4 out of the base with only one going in first - then pulling the pump to the block. Cam must of been at the right spot with the rod slipping in with grease to hold it. Lets hope its all good! Need to put gas in the new tank I installed as well with the pump. I also had pulled the alternator to get at it - was hard lying on the ground only to use one hand. with your 451 - is that a stroker? - -

with your 451 - is that a stroker? Yes 400 block/440 crank KB 280 pistons. I ain't even mocked up yet but if I was to do it over I would had the crank offset ground to get 470 cubes & that in a low deck is a nice combo. Not sure how far in or out of the hole I will be but I want to get quench & ~9 ish SCR as I like to run a fast curve
