There is a gouge or casting flaw or ? On the top end of the axel tube outside past where the inner seal sits. I have used this rear in a 70 Charger before swapping in a Dana and there were no noticeable problems. Junk?

Man, did you drag that thing out of Davey Jones' locker or what?

It almost looks like a groove worn in my the U bolt, but the U bolt ought to sit further inboard. If it doesn't leak I'd probably run it.

Agreed. Looks rough on that end only the rest of the housing is very smooth like they should be. I don't remember seeing one with a pit like this.

Maybe time for a cut-off wheel, another 8 3/4 with usable ends, and a welder...

Yeah I was just curious. I don't need it, every holiday my dad just asks about the cast-offs I've left in his shed.

Tucson AZ,
I just used one with a similar mark on it for narrowing my Dana... Is that rust or grease on yours? Maybe it exaggerates the depth just a bit?

It's greasy and dirty and the pit is deep but is slightly more offensive on camera with the flash. I suppose it could be filled in with weld.

I wouldn't worry about it. Even if it were a pin hole there the chance of a leak would be very minimal if any. Looks to be on top of the housing and there would not be much lube in that area to throw around.

You can grind clean, MIG, rough grind and finish it off with a file and you wouldn't be able to see where it was chafed. If you have the tools it would take less than ten minutes.

You shouldn't use it. I can take it off your hands though

Have you considered cleaning it?
