I use either Mobil Delvac or Shell Rotella 15w40.

I just add a zinc additive to regular oil for my non-roller engine.

$15 at Advanced Auto, enough for 3 oil changes.

Maybe the oil is different north of the border ? But I thought the EPA mandate had zinc removed from Diesel oil too ? Maybe not as much as from the passenger segment but enough to warramt it not being a good enough alternative for flat tappet use ?

The EPA doesn't have limits on zinc limits for motor oil.

The limits are established by the auto makers and the API, based on what is required for catalytic converter life to meet EPA exhaust emission limits at end of life.

It is a subtle but important difference.

With the introduction of catalytic converters on diesels I wouldn't trust any older specs for ZDDP content in diesel oils.

Rotella has the DPF (diesel particulate filter) compliant additive package, which means the ZDDP level is reduced from the original level. Also, the current CJ-4 API rating on Rotella T mandates a higher level of dispersant additives, and these dispersant additives compete against the formation of the ZDDP anti-wear film. In slower speed diesel engines, this is not a problem. However, it is an issue in higher speed, flat tappet, gasoline engines.
