I have a set of 15x7 wheels with a 4 1/4" back spacing. What's the best tire choice for my 66 Coronet?

I don't remember the back spacing, but I ran 235 60 15's easily on my 64 Fury wagon and my 66 Charger. The Charger could have taken more, the Fury was pretty much maxed out.

I managed to stuff 255/45/18's with 5.5" backspace in my 66 Coronet. 10" tread width is the max for sure with no mods imo.

I have that size rim on my 67 Coronet 500 and the biggest tire I managed to put in it was M/T ET Street Radial P255/60/R15.

67 Coronet 500 9.610 @ 139.20 mph
67 Coronet 500 (street car) 14.82 @ 94 mph
69 GTX (clone) - build in progress......

I have an 8 x 15 wheel with 275/60/15 with no mods in the rear. To do this, I carefully measured and ended up with 5.25" backspacing? if memory serves. I can JUST get the tire on/ off. I am convinced that this is the maximum size you can fit without moving springs etc.

275/60-15. Biggest that will fit. May or may not have to roll or trim the lip. Will still rub ever so slightly with multiple people and sharp uphill turns. (On the inside of fender) (With that 15x7 rim size, and 4 1/4 BS)

Thanks for the replys but how tall can I go on the front without rubbing? It has been converted to disc brakes.

One thing that makes a small difference is if you still have the '66 housing and not the wider '68-up unit.

I had a 275-60-15, 15x7" rim with 4.25BS, on a '67 Belvedere with a '69 housing. It fit, barely, with rolled fender lips.

Since a 275 tire is really too big for a 7" wheel, I plan to change to a 255-70-15 with the same wheel and use the original '67 housing.

Most 275-60-15 tires are 28" tall. I don't recall and height issues, that's why I'm going with a taller 70 series tire so I can get the highway RPMs down.

If you go with a 275-60-15, don't use a 7" wheel, use a 8" rim with 5.5"BS like Hemi ragtop did.

I know its not ideal, but I've had a 275/60 on a 7" rim for 10 years and never had an issue with uneven wear, traction at track, or anything else. I have a 27 inch tall tire in front with no where close to rubbing. (205/75-15) Right now i have a 255/70 tire out back (because i had them already) and its 29.1" tall.

I use a M/T ET Street radial 255/60 on an 8" steel wheel with 4.5 backspace. It fits in there nicely and no rubbing. You really need a 5+" backspace like the others have mentioned here to make a bigger tire work without more mods. I believe the Dodge is even tighter up in the wheel well than the Plymouth.

My rears are 255/60-15 on 15x7 3.75" BS. They will rub the wheel lip. Fronts are 205/70-15.

That's what I started with on my 67 Coronet 500 and around corners it would rub the wheel well molding. I was not going to trim the molding so I went with the 7" 4 1/4 backspace - that solved the problem.

Dynorad, congrats on you car. It looks awesome. Could you share what brand your wheels are and their specs please? (Front and rear). Thanks
