I need to break my 440 down to a short block in order to bring to get rebuilt. I have the engine on a stand with the heads off and am trying to determine how to keep the engine from spinning so that I can remove the bolt holding the harmonic balancer on. Any tips would be appreciated.

Pretty much any impact will take it off, Including my electric harbor freight one. Otherwise you're going to have to wedge it at the transmission end of the crank.

You can make a holding fixture for the crank flange end or flywheel/flex plate. A heavy piece of strip steel drilled to match opposite crank flange or flywheel/flexplate holes. Flywheel/flexplate is best as less possibility to mess up the crank flange. With matching bolts and washers for spacers it will work...

That said, an impact is a lot easier.

Don't you mean you're going to take it to get rebuilt, not bring it to get rebuilt?

Several different tools are made for that task. If you have the engine on a stand then the strap works the best. If it is in the car the you use the tool that bolts to the damper.

Ding ding ding I do believe we have a winna. You're obviously stripping it down to a bare block. As said am impact would work fine but since you dont have one you dont need to borrow one (time is money). If the pan wasn't coming off I'd bolt a piston stop across a bore to lock the assy

I usually block the crank at a counterweight with a mallet-handle. Then take my breaker-bar to the crank-bolt.

no one's used the old shadetree trick, cram a cylinder full of rope during the compression stroke.wouldn't try it on a good engine though

I used a flywheel turner to hold it

Get the right socket on a stiff breaker bar. Pull on the breaker bar until all the slack is out of the assembly.
Hit the breaker bar sharply with a dead blow hammer. It may take a few hits but the bolt should start turning. The inertia/friction of the shortblock assembly will resist turning enough to allow the bolt to loosen.

This is the manual version of an impact wrench.

I just did it on my last 318.

put a breaker bar with a socket on the bolt. forget that it's there. attempt to start the car.

believe me, this will loosen the bolt!

Hey, that's right. I've done that on a front wheel drive car to replace the timing belt.

Missed the part about it being on the stand did we?

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

I once accidentally did that on a French car (Forgot the socket wrench was still on the crank ).

After that it was time for some new valves, because apparently this car didn't have a woodruff key on the crank timing belt pulley

A breaker bar with a hammer worked fine for my 318 also.

Here is the best bang for the buck IMHFO. I don't know how many times it has made it all the more easier to remove the crank bolt. Even if you only use it once it more than pays for itself...
