Pulled my pump gas 451 out and decided to evaluate it to see what it needed. All cylinders leak down to 2 percent or 3% except for one... turned out to be 5%. mains looked so so..pulled the rod bearings and found this on both sides of the rod bearing. any ideas what caused it?

My buddy didnt think it was detonation Looking for ideas.

hi
looks like condensation that did not get burned off due to not running engine long enough to boil out moisture .
condensation left in the oil creates acid that eats the metal .

Both sides as in the back of the bearing too or just the upper and lower faces?

If it is just the bearing faces, it looks like antifreeze contamination.

the shineness may have been the bad bearing materials being washed out and balling up or scrubbing the bearings on the way out Condensation as a big problem with most interanl combustion motors that don't get use very often and sit a long time bewteen using them, IE airplanes, boats, motorhomes and motorcylces Clean the rods and crank up and install a new set of rod bearings and you should be golden I try to make sure when I know a toy is going to sit a long time that I take it out and drive it long enough for the oil to get hot and circulate the oil real good when hot and then park it, no starting it up in between using it the next time for a long drive again

Acidity in the oil IMO ... to confirm ....send it out for a test like they do with big-rig truck engines.

Have seen similar looking bearings when the engine wasn't grounded good. Maybe not quite as bad as shown, but similar.

My thought also. Make sure you have good / multiple engine grounds.

The pitting is only on the crank side of the bearing... the condensation makes sense because before i pulled it years ago it was only run for short periods..

The grounding of the block puzzels me I had the usual ground wire and i think a solid mount on one side. I wouldnt think there would be any current flow...could someone expoundon that please..

Thanks
