Its a Holley 80508 4 bbl that after start up begins a steady decrease in idle speed until it dies. Takes about a minute or so to finally stop running. Idles great for about 10 seconds, then......
Even if I feather the throttle to keep it running until it starts warming up it will die. Float?

Could be. Do you have a pressure guage in the line? A clear filter to see if it is getting a steady stream of fuel?
You should have at least 5 lbs of pressure at idle at a bare minimum. Maybe a worn fuel pump? If it is a big block, is the fuel pump pushrod worn and not giving a long stroke to the fuel pump?

No...no pressure gauge. And the pushrod is new, less than 800 miles on engine/fuel pump.

Has this combo idled okay before for you and just now started dying at isle? Or is it new to you with no previous experience with it?

A few things to check; vacuum leak, initial timing, fuel delivery, dirty fuel, bad PCV valve, proper idle jet, proper idle air bleed, proper float level.

Master, again and still

I have had to take my carb apart and clean it 3 times in the 6 years I have had it on the road, due to poor idling characteristics... Yes, it was rebuilt ( its the stock carter that came on the car new) when the car was first put back on the road.. The float bowls had slime and dirt each time.. NEW lines, tank, TWO fuel filters, fuel pump etc.....

I like most others also always blame the carb...
Last time I had near the same issue it was the plate in the distributor not returning correctly...A little spray of WD and it was gone...
Like a dumma$$ I mentioned it to my engine builder...He said
"I wish I could find a way to lock up the carburator in the trunk...as soon as something's not right everybody wants to mess with the carb."

...FAFO...

Does it smell heavy rich? My first though is float level or needle and seat not closing properly causing a loading up situation. I take it that if you clear it out the cycle will start all over again?

count # of turns to get the 2 idle mixture screws in to lightly seated. Take out the idle mixture screws. shoot a 3 second blast of starting fluid into each of the two ports with ae thin red straw (likely have to work the nozzle so a straw will fit as SF cans do not usually come with/use a straw). replace mix screws to orig # of turns. See if it will now idle

Wait before restart dumping that much starting fluid into the engine.

It has always idled well. I'll check the things you listed...thank you.

Yes, it does smell very rich. And I've had problems with the float before, but its been rebuilt since then and no problems since the rebuild until now. (a month at least)

I will try this...thank you.
