HP will be about the same with a slight edge to the stroker. TQ will go to the stroker hands down. I have built a lot of stroker motors for people and not one has shown any regret about stroking it, just real big grins. Like mentioned it is not just about peak power, the stroker will tend to make a flatter power band, pretty much everyone picks up big numbers in the 1/4 going stroker. You will get to a point to where the TQ is just too mch, then it is just right

I am rebuilding a 440 and is about to come out of the machine shop and I am at a cross road. My first idea was stroke the 440 to a 511 from Ohio Crankshaft. Now my friends are telling me it's a waste of money that the stock 440 will make about the same as the stroked 440. they both will have Eddie heads and intake. Whats your take on it?
Your friends must be Chevy and Ford guys, not Mopar knowledgable, me thinks That or they don't want you making more power than them with a stock stroke motor If you want the most power and performance, especially for a strret car, use the 4.250 stroke crank with the 2.20 rod journal sizes(BB Chevy type on both ends ) and a set of 7.100 long 4340 steel beam rods H beam rods with between 10.0 to 10.75 to 1 compression ratio, dependent on your local pump gas quality and type, E10 stay close to 10.0, non ethanol 93 octane shoot for 10.75 to 1 That combination with a Eddy RPM heads and a Eddy RPM intake will easily make(depending on the cam, headers and carb sizes) well over 550 HP and close to 600 Ft lbs torque, or more The stock stroke motor with identicle parts will make around 50 HP less and similar less torque My first pump gas stroker motor, 400 block with 4.375 bore and 4.250 stroke, made 612 Hp at 5500 RPM and 644 Ft lbs at 4400 RPM with a set of big valve mildly ported 906 iron heads(9.25 to 1 comp. ratio on CA 91 octane pump swill a long time ago ) and a low deck six pak set up with a big (for the street ) solid roller cam That rascal far exceeded my wildest expectations That motor made right at 1.2 HP per C.I., you can get similar results too

Your not saying if this is a street build.. if so then torque is great on the street.. thats what moves a car.. on a all out race engine... torque PLUS RPM is what you want... so you want the arm but yet you want the revs

Stroke it. Think of it this way- the car spends more time in the bottom half of each gear, and that is why strokers work. More torque in the first half, and more average torque overall.

I have built 3 stroker motors out of 440 blocks a 496 a 512 and a 572 they make more power with out running a 440 to a inch of it's life strokers are the only way to go

If it was me, I already have the 440 machined.

I don't think it is a matter of ".....it's a waste of money....". More accurately it is a matter of what is your budget, and the what are the advantages of the stroker over the 440, and is it worth it to you. In the end, only you can answer this.
First I suggest that you do a detailed cost analysis between the two options. Then you get real clear on the goal of the car. If you put the same parts in both motors, the stroker will make more power. And the power will be at a slightly lower rpm range.
If it is a street car, the advantage of the stroker is that it will be more docile on the street at the same power level as the 440.
My car with its 500 in motor runs in the 11s at 120 mph, has a stock converter and a 3.23 gear. It drives through the neighborhood in third gear (auto) at 25 mph and 1100 rpm very nicely. My motor cost a little more, but here is what I did not have to buy: headers, exhaust system, gear, converter, tires. I probably saved over $3,000 on that stuff.
But, that is what I wanted. Your case will be completely different.
