So I go down to the garage this weekend hoping to open the trunk to add some staybil to my fuel cell and remove my battery from the trunk to put it on a trickle charger and my key will not open the trunk lock. I tried pushing down on the deck lid while turning the key and pulling up on the deck lid while turning the key. I wiggled the key back and forth, up and down and all that jazz and it still won't open. I only have this one key for the door locks and trunk lock and it honestly is worn so thin that I am not surprised that it isn't working properly.

Any suggestions on how to get my trunk open so I can replace the lock cylinder? I'm considering calling AAA to see if they can pop it open but afraid of what they might do to my freshly painted car.

Thanks everyone,
Jay

Take out the back seat and crawl into the trunk. You can then use a regular screwdriver to turn the latch from inside. I wonder if the metal tab that runs from the lock tumbler to the latch broke.

go through the back seat to the trunk. Remove the clip holding the lock cylinder and remove the lock (someone outside to catch the lock would be helpful). once the lock is removed use a flashlight and a long skinny screwdriver to un lacth the mechanism.

And FYI they normally use a different key for the trunk lock

No can do. I have a welded in rear firewall that has fresh carpeting glued to it. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Thanks. My car has 2 keys. One that starts the car and the other one that opens the doors and trunk. I can't crawl through because I have a welded in rear firewall for racing. And I just had new sound deadener and carpeting glued to it.

Your either going to have to drill a hole through the rear firewall large enough to pass a long tool through or drill/punch out the trunk lock.

Why welded in?

Thanks...good info but not what I was hoping to do. My luck I will screw up the paint around the lock when drilling it out.

I have a metal rear firewall that was tack welded in at my request. It's needed for racing when battery is mounted in the trunk.

OK, go down to your local hardware store and buy some dry lock lubricant. It's only a couple bucks, and worth a shot. I've used it on a couple outdoor locks with success. http://www.homedepot.com/p/The-Hillman-Group-3-g-Powdered-Graphite-Lubricant-703185/100137063

Seven sixteenths or Half inch drill bit and drill out the lock from the outside. then when the lock assembly has hole through it take a screw driver and trip the latch. requires new key assembly.

Use a small drill bit and drill out the pins of the lock. Then use a screwdriver to open the lock.

The trouble opening your trunk will depend on what is wrong. If the trouble is the key/tumbler assembly , drilling it will get it open . if the lever connecting the key assembly to the trunk latch is broken or not connected, drilling the tumblers ain't going to help. But of course , it's your best bet right now. However the first thing I would do is get a new key made and see what happens then .

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I'm going to try squirting some fine graphite lubricant in it (I have some from lubing up my kids derby car)and if that don't work I'm going get a new key made. Then I'll try the other things you guys mentioned. Last thing to try would be drilling it out. Hope I don't have to go that route.

I'll update this thread following each step I take.

Thanks again folks.

If the key thing doesn't work I might suggest a dremel tool vs the drilling.

It will be a slower process but more controllable with less chance of damaging the paint or tail panel

Did you try squirting some WD-40 in the lock and gently wiggling it with the key afterward??????

The key should open the door and be used in the ignition, that would be a Pentastar style key. The key that opens the trunk is a round style key. Did you ever use the key that doesn't work in the lock before?
